North Carolina attorney and law professor. Former Judge on the North Carolina Court of Appeals. Double Tar Heel. Georgia born, Carolina raised.
When I was running to keep my seat on the Court of Appeals in 2020, Governor Hunt was incredibly generous with his time and wisdom. And he had so many great stories from his lifetime of service! Rest in peace, Governor Hunt.

Fantastic early birthday treat to celebrate at the Governor’s holiday party. Least surprising moment of the evening? Woman exclaiming to Moira “what a WONDERFUL dress!”

Happy holidays to us all!

A horrific anti-Semitic attack in Australia has shattered lives and stained the first night of Hanukkah. Anna and I are praying for the families in Sydney. And we are keeping the students of Brown University and their families in our hearts as they mourn.

Hate and violence have no place anywhere.

Great to catch up with former colleagues—and get more material for my 2051 self-published novel—at the Court of Appeals holiday dinner. Happy holidays!!!

Governor Stein knocked it out of the park selecting Jeffrey Smythe as Secretary of Public Safety. Our state will prosper immensely from his experience and wisdom. And rumor has it he is quite a soccer player. Congrats, Jeff!

Happy Veterans Day, North Carolina!

Our veterans show us the true meaning of service. They put others before themselves and remind us of the power of honor, courage, and integrity.

This Veterans Day, and every day, I am grateful for their service and continued contributions to North Carolina.

Wonderful to be at NC Central Law for a North Carolina Advocates for Justice panel on working today as a civil rights attorney—um, we had plenty to discuss. Extra treat: being on a panel full of old friends, including my extraordinary new law partner Robyn Sanders.

Chief Justice Cheri Beasley led our courts with wisdom and courage through a pandemic, the Black Lives Matters protests, and myriad technological challenges. The North Carolina Supreme Court Historical Society (and many friends!) rightly honored her and her leadership earlier this week.

Hurricane Helene isn’t just a story of destruction and pain. It’s also a story of resilience and grit. The people of western North Carolina are strong, and we will stand by them every step of the way.

It is important each and every year to reflect on our Constitution and the meaning of “We the People.” Even more so this #ConstitutionDay with Central law students, when so many values we hold dear are being debated anew.

One of the highlights of 2020 for Moira & me was campaigning w/ (the incomparable) Chief Justice Cheri Beasley & (then House member, now Senate Dem Leader, always Carolina Law buddy) @friendsforbatch.bsky.social. Great to be back w/ them again five years on, still fighting for a more just #NC.
