I'm not usually woo-woo, but I do believe that all my writing comes from somewhere else, some mysterious place I have the fortune of tapping into. Even with very short pieces, if I don't look at them for a few months, I forget them, until I come across one in a notebook and marvel at its existence.
Without serious effort, I can only remember 30-40 pages at once, about the length of a long story. 230 pages in, when I flip back through my draft, it's as if someone else wrote the pages—and today I felt a weird wonder at glimpsing that other's process, even though he's me too, or used to be...

I just got to do one of my favorite things: chat with a high school student about different ways to approach writing—as a craft and a practice. He was adamant that he only wants to contribute good to the world. My heart 💗

Good morning #5amWritersClub. Yesterday I listened to David Foster Wallace's story "Backbone" on the New Yorker fiction podcast and it reminded me about the power of lingering on details. Today I plan to slow down and see what's hiding in each moment. Happy writing!
