Since I've gained a few new followers: hello, I work as a Senior Staff Lawyer at Women's Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF) based in Toronto. I work on areas of gender equality, with a focus on technology-facilitated gender-based violence and sex work.
A national AI strategy is too important to "sprint" through in 30 days. I've signed an open letter alongside 160+ civil society & human rights groups, academics, experts, and advocates, protesting Minister Solomon's "consultation" and demanding a re-do:

NEW: 1km of Montreal’s Ste-Catherine Street will become permanently “pedestrian only” (less than perfect term since it will be a people-place for a LOT more than walking). 225+ new trees, vegetation-covered pits for rain drainage, more seating, illuminated canopy, financial help for businesses, etc.
Stretch of Ste-Catherine Street East to become pedestrian-only year-round | CBC News
The City of Montreal announced Friday their "ambitious" plans to transform a portion of Ste-Catherine Street East into a pedestrian road year-round, with redevelopment work starting in fall 2026.

Not sure if anyone reads my updates (skeets?) anymore, but here is an essay I wrote recently for @theglobeandmail.com on watching my (once strict) parents becoming gentle grandparents & what I learned from it:
As I watched my strict mom and dad soften as grandparents, I was reminded that the world does not treat parents gently
My parents’ gift of intergenerational childcare for my daughter taught me that people have the capacity to change – but that they need to be freed to be their full selves

Israel has killed approximately 200 journalists in Gaza in just 22 months, which is more than the combined number of journalists killed during WWII and the entirety of the Vietnam War.

No words.
Read this passage, please, about trying to provide therapy for trauma in Gaza, even though it should make you feel like you are stabbing needles into your eyes.

The "second-generation cut off" has been described as a genocide “in paper form;" as "an evil that threatens our very existence;" as an act of "retaliation;" as discrimination, and, as assimilation. Yet it remains a part of Canadian law. Why?

Indian Act's ‘second-generation cut-off’ poses an existential threat to treaty people in Canada
Thanks to the Indian Act’s ‘second-generation cut-off,’ First Nations people face a baffling and offensive equation when it comes to their status rights.

Buried in Columbia's agreement/bribe with the Trump regime (and not reported by the news) is a section which agrees to segregate trans women from women's housing, sports, and bathrooms. Functionally, trans women are no longer welcome at Columbia University.

Update — It’s been 15 hours since the Freedom Flotilla Coalition last saw or heard from their friends on board the Gaza Aid Flotilla.

They have not been allowed any contact with them.

Their exact statuses are not known.

Supreme Court of Canada is scheduled to hear the Kanyinda case in 2 weeks. I'm honoured to act as counsel for @fcjrefugeecentre.mastodon.social.ap.brid.gy & @madhucentre.bsky.social in their joint intervention. We argue the Canadian Charter must meaningfully protect substantive equality of migrants.
