I find a lot of what’s going on politically and in the world right now fairly confusing but this one genuinely has me completely stumped. Nov 11th is referred to as Armistice Day in other Allied countries but still operates as “Veterans Day”. These proposed names are clunky, awkward, and reductive.
President Trump said that he would rename Veterans Day, on Nov. 11, as “Victory Day for World War I” and May 8, widely known as V-E Day, as “Victory Day for World War II,” so that the U.S. could celebrate its achievements in those conflicts.
Trump Says He Is Renaming Veterans Day as ‘Victory Day for World War I’
The president said he would also label May 8, known as V-E Day for Victory in Europe, as “Victory Day for World War II,” and vowed to celebrate America’s military wins.

Computer decided to invent a new word today: smursmers. A reminder why looking up a word you don't know/aren't sure of in the dictionary often leads to more accurate results than a quick translate. Maybe I'll start using that word to mean an incorrect or bad translation. Smursmers.

Tech like this basically surrenders the autonomy over one’s memories and ultimately of one’s individual identity. Memories make us who we are, they are individually embodied, unreproducible outside the mind, only able to be shared in a way that is inherently transformative.

As expected, the Trump team is already deleting climate info from government websites. In anticipation, our team at Urban Ocean Lab created a permanent archive of 100+ key resources and published a permanent archive: www.urbanoceanlab.org/resource-hub 👩🏽‍💻

As we see more and more once-in-a-lifetime weather events and the decline in government services, I'd urge folks to expand their home shelter-in-place kits beyond the typical 3 or so days.

Have food and backup power/comms. I shoot for 2 weeks, plus being a phone recharge hub for neighbors in need.

Octavia's Bookshelf owner Nikki High doesn’t know the state of her own house in Altadena — most houses burned — but she's turned her Pasadena bookstore into a help center for fire victims.

Follow the IG/Threads accounts for updates. They still need first aid kits. We also brought bottled water.

I mean it. If you are anywhere in fire country, download Watch Duty. With Facebook pulling down evacuation info (they did it to our area this summer) and Xitter being unusable, it’s the best source of info. They link the evac maps.

Many animal shelters are overwhelmed from people dropping off beloved pets they can't take with them as they flee. Please consider donating and fostering. Pasadena Humane is one such org. Contact your local animal orgs to see if they need help.
