250 years ago today Virginia governor Lord Dunmore declared martial law and promised freedom to the enslaved who would join his ranks.

For enslavers like Mark Bird this was a nightmare. But for Cuff Dix this was an opportunity for freedom.

Took about 20 years. And I never thought a book about enslavers using deputization to give themselves policing power would be relevant to our times. But we are where we are.

My book, White Power: Policing American Slavery, is now available for preorder.

I've spent much of my career studying the legal institution known as "the posse comitatus" as well as "The Posse Comitatus Act." Here's a quick thread. Cites at the end.

Posse comitatus is Latin for "power of the county," or temporarily deputized people obligated to assist law enforcers.

In 1847, Robert Cromwell was rescued from slave-catchers *in a federal courthouse* in part because of a judge’s quiet assistance. From what I know, that judge was never convicted of a crime.

I hope cases like Cromwell’s (and Joshua Glover's) give hope to folks in Wisconsin this weekend.
