Ethiopia last year banned the import of new gasoline-powered cars. Nepal reduced import duties on EVs so much that they are now cheaper than cars with internal combustion engines. Brazil raised tariffs on car imports to compel Chinese automakers to set up plants inside Brazil. Etc

A historic turning point for clean heating in Europe: For the first time, in the first half of 2025 sales of heat pumps in Germany have surpassed those of gas boilers.

This is a big milestone, demonstrating that the transition away from fossil fuels in our buildings is not just a future ambition.

One of the most self-destructive things Germany could do is to reverse the green transition now.

Renewables expansion has been on a tear but Germany has seen reversals before, unfortunately. And the country still does not have oil or gas and isn’t getting any anytime soon (ever).

A good quote but I was informed it’s not from Hannah Arendt, so I deleted my post which included that wrong attribution.

BYD, not fully invested in 🇪🇺, turns to Italy and is ready to ingest local component producers that used to supply ex-Fiat/Stellantis. 85 specialized firms in Turin alone have already signed contracts with BYD.

Clearly a transition that could have been home-made is happening via Chinese leadership.

New national climate plans have barely moved the needle on limiting global warming. Yet there is hope.

According to UNEP's latest #EmissionsGap Report, accelerated adoption of renewable energy and falling costs mean we have the tools to cut emissions now: www.unep.org/news-and-sto...

Today's agreement on the 🇪🇺 climate target allows 5% of the emission reduction by 2040 to be covered by carbon credits outside the EU. Effectively, this
▶️ reduces the 2040 target to 85%, below the 90-95% advised by scientists
▶️ diverts 5% of needed investments for climate neutrality away from Europe.
Today, EU climate ministers agreed on a 90% net reduction in GHG emissions by 2040. The Council also updated the NDC with an indicative 66.25–72.5% reduction by 2035 The @esabcc.bsky.social contributed to this process by providing independent scientific advice on the 2040 climate target.

Summary: Despite rapid global build-out of renewable energy generation, #fossil fuel use continues to increase, driven by rising #energy demand and slow global uptake of electric solutions in transport and heating.
➡️ Incentives to spur that uptake + measures adressing energy demand are still crucial
