Just for the optics alone, it would have been good for the EU and Ukraine to schedule a parallel meeting today to discuss how they see an end to the war. That way, when proper talks may start, there are two rivalling plans and the EU/Ukraine would not enter negotiations on the backfoot.
In the meantime the US and Russia meet to discuss how to end the Ukraine war — without the Ukrainians and Europeans.
