The CIA just stopped publishing their World Factbook and took every page, including the archived copies of previous versions!

This sucks. It was public domain, so I recovered the 2020 edition (the last one published as a zip file) and shared it to GitHub simonwillison.net/2026/Feb/5/t...
Spotlighting The World Factbook as We Bid a Fond Farewell
Somewhat devastating news today from the CIA: One of CIA’s oldest and most recognizable intelligence publications, The World Factbook, has sunset. There's not even a hint as to why they …

I must hear more about these Mr Magoo Palantir employees who weren't aware that Palantir has always been the bad guys.

Thiel'S thumbprints and Alex Karp's incoherent politics have been on full display since inception.
Palantir employees are pressing company leadership over its work for ICE in internal company Slacks obtained by @wired.com

"In my opinion ICE are the bad guys. I am not proud that the company I enjoy so much working for is part of this."

At the early-2000s computer security company I worked at, the former philosophy majors outnumbered the former computer science majors.

(None went by “philosopher” but many would have if they had known that were an option)

> "system crash” deleted nearly two weeks of surveillance footage from inside the facility

that's not how anything works they're lying and destroying evidence hope that helps
And what is happening inside ICE detention centers? 404 Media also learned that the federal government claimed that the day after it was sued for allegedly abusing detainees at an ICE detention center, a “system crash” deleted nearly two weeks of surveillance footage from inside the facility.
ICE Says Critical Evidence In Abuse Case Was Lost In 'System Crash' a Day After It Was Sued
The government also said "we don't have resources" to retain all footage and that plaintiffs could supply "endless hard drives that we could save things to."

A reminder to the news media: “conflicting accounts” is what you say BEFORE the incontrovertible video evidence appears. After that, your job is to ask why one side is lying, not to repeat the lie and pretend no one knows the truth.

Geese fans (rightfully) proud of their band for playing their most unlistenable song on SNL.

People unfamiliar with Geese (rightfully) completely alienated and disgusted at Geese for playing their most unlistenable song on SNL.

Everyone is right

The "why haven't you learned?" question underscores an ideological rift: he expected violence to clarify the question of authority in America once and for all, and her refusal to accept that leaves him confused.
A woman recording an ICE agent tells him "Shame on you."

The agent responds, "Have you all not learned from the past couple of days?"

"Learned what?" she asks

Then he knocks her phone out of her hand

So when authorities say “she tried to run over an officer,” that is not a neutral description. It is a claim of intent that can be used to justify lethal force after the fact.

When the state kills first and invents the threat afterward, it is not policing, it is death squad behavior. /end

Needless to say, I don't buy the "Trump is clashing with Putin" hype. The White House is pushing that narrative to cover up for Trump's long-running fealty to Putin. Sadly, media are buying it without thinking or asking "why did the Russian escort ships leave?"
