To add to this, so much of the “performative” debate seems to hinge on people merely doing things/existing in public e.g. reading a book…?
real spicy meatball of a take but also, it's fine to find ways to peacock to attract people of the opposite gender at basically any age? you'd rightly be treated as insane for arguing that women shouldn't eg. wear nice frocks on nights out, let men do things to try and get laid? they're allowed?
I think it’s totally fine for taste to be partly performative when you’re young. Books, records, movies, posters: it’s all part of identity formation and telling people who you want to be. The line between authentic and inauthentic is blurry at that age
