I’m gonna come out and say it: Vancouver is having a spectacular fall.

- Minimal rain
- But also nice CRISP temperatures, puts us in the season
- Summer not too hot, so trees kept their leaves, creating full cover for nice colours
- No elections or giant weather events to distract from joy

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

Wilhelm Röntgen discovered X-rays #OTD in 1895 when he noticed that emanations from a Crookes tube caused a platino-barium screen to fluoresce. The rays exposed photographic plates but were blocked by bone and metal.

This early plate shows his wife's hand. 🧪 ⚛️

Happy Women in Physics Day to all of the amazing women and gender minorities in physics!! We are still greatly under-represented at all levels, so we need to continue encouraging girls and young women to consider studying physics and make systemic changes to the climate in the field. ⚛️ 🎢 👩‍🔬 🧪

Chien-Shiung Wu (1912-1997) "The First Lady of Physics" In her long career, Chien-Shiung Wu disproved a "law" of nature (conservation of parity), worked on the Manhattan Project, became the first female instructor in Princeton's physics department, and earned a reputation as the leading experimental physicist of her time. Why November 7th? Because it is the birthday of two of the most impactful women physicists of the 1900's: Marie Curie and Lise Meitner. 🎢 ⚛️ 🧪 👩‍🔬
WOMEN IN PHYSICS DAY! In honor of the pioneering women in physics who broke down barriers to do what they love, we celebrate Women in Physics Day on November 7th, the birthdate of both Marie Curie and Lise Meitner. Marie Skrodowska-Curie (1867-1934) Radioactivity pioneer, two-time Nobel laureate A giant of science, Marie Sktodowska-Curie conducted pioneering research on radioactivity, a term she coined. She discovered two elements, founded two medical research centres, won two Nobels, and invented mobile X-ray units (dubbed petites Curies), saving countless lives in World War Lise Meitner (1878-1968) Nuclear physicist When Lise Meitner was a teen, Austria restricted female higher education. She pursued physics anyway, and 25 years later became the first woman in Germany to hold a professorship in physics. She helped discover nuclear fission, but was contentiously not awarded the 1944 Nobel alongside collaborator Otto Hahn. NOVEMBER 7TH

@governorferguson.bsky.social for proclaiming tomorrow, October 16th as #ShakeOut Day in Washington, and encouraging everyone to take action to learn about their earthquake and tsunami hazards!
A ceremonial Proclamation signed by Washington Governor Bob Ferguson on October 15th, 2025. The Proclamation emphasizes that Washington has the second-highest earthquake risk in the country, more than 3 thousand miles of coastline susceptible to tsunami hazards, and that either of these events, or both happening together, will have a devastating effect on our State and the whole region. As a result, Washingtonians are encouraged to take time tomorrow to practice Drop, Cover, and Hold on appropriately for situations where they might find themselves during an earthquake; to practice their tsunami evacuation routes to high ground if they live within a tsunami hazard zone; and to take time to take additional preparedness actions, like making emergency plans, gathering supplies to be "2 Weeks Ready," (visit mil.wa.gov/preparedness for more information) and other emergency preparedness activities.
