One of my main goals as an author is to sell enough books so they'll let me write another one. Currently, it looks like that's not going to happen since my publisher is not happy with the sales of my second book. A sophomore slump. I'm open to promo ideas & would appreciate any shares of this post!

I feel like this belongs on top of a Christmas tree
A coworker gave my husband a cutting from his dragon fruit cactus. I stuck it in a pot and ignored it.

It bloomed. Bloom is HUGE, maybe 5-6 inches.

Today I handed in the full manuscript for The Slime Mold's Guide to World Domination. After two years of incessant deadline pressure, I feel like I can finally breathe again. Now I can catch up on all that thrilling housework and home maintenance I've been putting off for months! Also: stare at sky

This morning, after > two years, I finished reading the very last paper for my slime mold book. In case you've ever wondered how much research it takes to write a book, here is a photo of 95% of the papers and all but three of the books I read to write "The Slime Mold's Guide to World Domination".

Yesterday I disqualified a paper from research on my slime mold book for being nearly incoherent, a punishment I dubbed the "Pain Penalty". To back up my sense that this thing was not worth it, I checked the number of citations on Google Scholar: 9.

I low-key suggest renaming this squid Barad durensis
The Ram's Horn Squid (Spirula spirula) is the sole living member of the order Spirulida and has a uniquely shaped internal shell that resembles a ram's horn.

It was formally described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758, but we didn't see one alive in its natural habitat until 2020!
