So the problem is that a computer server got replaced and probably needs to be rebooted. Which is what I've been asked to do. Without being told which of the 8 computer towers it was (they don't all have monitors attached).
Boss calls: Can you follow up on a couple of files? I've saved them to this spreadsheet.
Me: No problem. *opens spreadsheet . . . it's blank*

He does not want Star Trek. He wants to co-opt the aesthetic of Star Trek to sell his techno-feudalist futurist wet dream. Star Trek hates men like him.
"We want to make Star Trek real," said Elon Musk.

"We want to make Starfleet Academy real so that it's not always science fiction, but one day the science fiction turns to science fact."

Hi! Have you had a high protein meal today? Taken your meds? Drank liquids other than coffee? Contacted a local elected official?

It's understandable to struggle with compartmentalizing the latest horrors to be productive enough for the sake of capitalism. Take a deep breath. One thing at a time.

One of my kids invited a few friends over for a sleepover tonight, so my usual basement spot where I write and watch my shows will be filled with middle schoolers.

The creators of these apps make choices. Grok was created with the production of deep-fake abuse imagery as an option and that was a choice. The fact that the app is still producing these images, for free, with no restrictions, for anyone who wants them, is also an ongoing choice by its creators.
I've been testing Grok vs. ChatGPT and how they compare when generating deepfakes.
- ask the chatbot to search the web for photos of me and then regenerate me in a bikini: Grok complies; ChatGPT refuses
- upload a photo of myself (not id'ing as a public figure): Grok complies; ChatGPT refuses

Remembering today that having your heart broken is a necessary step on the path to becoming fully human. Whichever heartbreak is your first, it’s probably critical that a state break your heart so that you can develop a political imagination. If this is your first, I’m sorry and also welcome.

I love the days when I'm just forwarded a long chain of emails between various people from a client with zero context as to what is going on. I'm always like . . . was this a mistake? Or am I supposed to read this back and forth exchange of emails and infer what you want me to do?

Avalanche danger is a real thing in western Canada. Sometimes an innocent day of father/son tobogganing can turn deadly. As conditions set to worsen in BC this weekend let's see what we can learn from this tragic incident back in 2014. youtu.be/eFaNXT2o5bg

The scale of the protests in Iran are absolutely unbelievable. Hard to quantify, but I've seen some speculation that this uprising is more significant than the 2023 protests (themselves the largest challenge to the regime since it came into power in '79.)

Something interesting you might not have realized: a number of words in English are NOUNS when you stress the FIRST syllable, but VERBS when you stress the SECOND syllable.

"Your CONduct is better when you conDUCT yourself appropriately.”

Police procedurals help normalize this FYI
I don't know who needs to hear this, but cops are not allowed to shoot people just because you didn't do what they said.

That is called murder when they do that.

Some cops are working hard to convince people otherwise.

I’ve been watching a lot of straight men react to romance book content lately & really enjoyed it. Realized it’s because I love seeing them delighted. It’s not very common.

Just as an FYI, while restoration and construction professionals may have anecdotal experience about what is/isn't covered by insurance policies, they don't have expertise in policy exclusions or an understanding of your overall insurance and risk situation.

It’s certainly possible that AVs could reduce future crashes. But it’s not a given, and they definitely don’t offer the only (or optimal) way to do so.

Consider: Several European cities have gone a full year without any traffic deaths. None relied on robotaxis to do it.
Helsinki went a full year without a traffic death. How did they do it?
Nordic capitals keep showing how we can eliminate traffic fatalities.

So I am keeping this general but let’s say I’ve had reason to see a middle schooler’s class assignments recently. A kid with no personal tech was being throughly exposed to ChatGPT in their class work.

I tried really hard not to…be me about it.

Suffice to say I failed. I was me about it.
my 3rd grader is describing projects and I recently realized, oh god, they are doing searches and being delivered trash and they have no reference point to understand how to assess or sift; the only way is to return to the encyclopedia or similar, at least as a foundation

I need a mood booster, let's talk about capybaras.

Here's a capy demonstrating one of MANY ways they can move through the water: running along the bottom.

They're 'semi-aquatic' mammals, just like hippos, seals & beavers. They LOVE water.
