Remember when you first learned about genetics at school? All those fascinating examples of human traits that are each apparently determined by just a single gene? Time to check in on some of your favourites to see how they’re doing. 🧬🧵🧪 1/n

ACTION ITEM-----ACTION ITEM

Implementation of Schedule F

This is what a lot of us have been worried about.

This allows for many civil service positions to replaced with political appointees. This could include NIH institute directors and even POs.

BUT THERE IS A COMMENT PERIOD...

A trusted editor has asked if I can identify a lab or PI or research team who have lost funding/shut down a project, whose loss will help narrativize the current moment for an everyday reader.
Is this you? Or someone you know? Would love to hear recs or be in contact.

📣Study sections re-scheduled!
The study section that was supposed to review my grant in Feb (that did not meet because of Federal Register Blackout) has been rescheduled to April!
Fingers crossed it will actually get reviewed 🤞

Taking a cue from @cantlonlab.bsky.social, I have written an op-ed for my local newspaper about the impact of the NIH funding chaos. I'd appreciate it if you read and share. #NIH #Research #Science #Worcester

Opinion/Guest column: Gutting NIH a disaster in the marking for research, local economy
Less research equates to less business between the university and these Worcester companies, spreading the pain far beyond campus borders.

Friends, I am at a loss of words for how devastating it would be to lose the entire intramural #NIH program. Some of the biggest medical and scientific breakthroughs have come from scientists in the NIH Intramural program. #SaveTheNIH 🧬🧪 🖥️ 🧠

The White House has ground NIH operations to a halt.

E.g., the NHLBI’s CCHS study section, which evaluates large patient-oriented cardiovascular research proposals, was cancelled at the last minute this week.

This is bad for science, scientists, patients/the public, and the economy.

NIH indirects case update:

Hearing ongoing now, and I'll try to live tweet some notable exchanges.

Prior to more detailed arguments, Judge Kelley starts off with a few point questions to both sides:

Almost all grant-review meetings under Trump 2.0 remain suspended at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), preventing the world’s largest public funder of biomedical research from spending much of its US$47 billion annual budget.
