On 13 June, @theguardian.com published a collective letter concerning Russia’s war & attacking Dr #FionaHill, the chancellor of Durham University & one of the principal authors of the UK’s strategic defence review. As UK-based or British-educated experts in matters pertaining to Russia, we disagree.

Worth noting how far right MAGA US intellectuals often now claim that Canadian national identity is fake and Mexicans are not capable of managing a state.

All reminiscent of the predominant narratives in Russia claiming that Ukrainian identity does not exist and Kazakhs are incapable of statehood

It’s time for UK and Europe to make clear to the Trump administration that this peace plan, including the abandonment of Crimea to Russia, is a load of utter bollocks.

Little chance the CBP can keep up with and appropriately apply the constantly shifting landscape of tariffs and the likelihood of tariff arbitrage is high.
Trump's tariff announcements are performative in both the technical and popular understandings of the word.

But it continues with him as president, 100%.
Every time the same story and tune. "The U.S. is talking to Russia. We want them to stop," — Trump on the war in Ukraine.

"I don’t like the shelling. The bombings don’t stop. Thousands of young people die every week. This horror wouldn’t have started if I were president, 100%."

What a flop. Marine Le Pen’s public fight-back against her legal ban from the 2027 French presidential election started badly today. She hoped for up to 20,000 supporters at a rally in Paris. Her party claimed 10,000. An independent count suggested only 6,000. 1/

Excellent piece.

“The tariffs announced on Wednesday are roughly 10 times as high as those of most other industrialized countries, and higher than the infamous Smoot-Hawley tariffs (of Great Depression fame)”.
I pitched my NYT editor that folks really need to understand that the deadweight loss of tariffs rises in the square of the tariff rate. Despite the wonkiness of it all, they said yes--as long as you can explain that intuitively.

Lemme know how I did:

In 2024 - $506.7 billion.
A 98% increase.
