Portland protests upholding their anarchic reputation
If this is is “like living in hell” I am even more confused about religious people’s choices

The City of Portland put out a press release last night asking portlanders not to take the bait. If only we were that disciplined

“Don’t Take the Bait.” Portland leaders urge calm in face of federal buildup at ICE facility.
Amid escalating rhetoric from President Donald Trump and reports of armored federal vehicles on the streets, local leaders united to urge Portland to stand strong and reject violence.

I'd just like to observe that serious minds are focused on a powerful weapon being forged from an exotic metal in large caverns in the heart of a mountain. If that's not dwarf-coded I don't know what is

The details of this are wild. hashing passwords on the client side, plaintext on a server that should have been blind to the contents, development vm dump endpoint unprotected to the internet

I don't know a lot of #rust folks on here, but I have a new crate to announce: github.com/jbr/fieldwork is an expressive and configurable proc-macro for struct accessor generation (getters and setters) #rustlang

Press coverage of the Pakistan-India conflict consistently mentions that both are nuclear-armed, but it seems even more important that Pakistan does *not* have a no-first-use policy. Their nuclear doctrine permits the use of nuclear arms in the context of a large-scale conventional conflict

How does FOIA work for presidents that have non consecutive terms? Are trump-45 presidential records available for request this year or do we have to wait until 2034 for both terms? (assuming the federal government is vaguely intact)

If the executive wields pardon power and/or presidential immunity to shield the entire executive branch from judicial review and subsequent contempt, is that effectively an entirely-legal coup if congress doesn't intercede?

We’re going to find out in a bunch of years after he dies or is deposed that Trump thought that Abrego Garcia’s name was “kill more”

Here’s the thing I don’t understand: if you’re running an international company, what’s the incentive to move manufacturing domestically instead of just weathering four years of recession? The capital investment to build domestic production seems like it would cost more than lost revenue

A new equivalent of traveling back in time to stop hitler is traveling back in time to stop PayPal from succeeding. Maybe thiel and musk and sacks would have started a band after their company flopped, instead of meaningfully contributing to our democratic backslide

Just remembered this story from October that didn't get much attention because it didn't seem all that important apnews.com/article/musk...
Here's a look at Musk's contact with Putin and why it matters
The Wall Street Journal reports that billionaire Elon Musk and Russian President Vladimir Putin have been in regular contact.

I guess I'll start posting over here. Does anyone have a good piece about why reputable entities like journalists and media outlets have gravitated here instead of fediverse/mastodon? It seems like this is the default destination for x/threads refugees, with nary a mention of mastodon
