I enjoyed Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality when I was younger, but I couldn't stomach following Yudkowsky on Twitter. He really liked the smell of his own farts. Which shouldn't have surprised me, given that he wrote a fanfic that combined a children's book and rationalism.

Yeah. I know it's obviously not that simple, but it looks like it should be when you're watching it on TV.

Curling is the one Olympic sport that I think I could get to a near-elite level, never having done it before. I'll never flip and twist like Simone Biles, but I can absolutely slide a stone down the ice, yell a few times and scrape the ice with a broom. That's why it is the best Olympic sport.

I attribute it more to Jack Welch than Reagan. Welch changed the culture of corporations and ushered in management-by-finance. This philosophy is great at extracting short-term gains at the expense of long-term value.

My theory has been that letting the finance and accounting people run companies is a net negative. Many such companies have moved towards finding efficiencies while undermining their core competencies. They manage to the next earnings call without regard for long-term growth.

They've now changed their tune and said it wasn't Trump. Because there was no way to really deny that it was racist.

CNN's current headline says he shared a racist video as well, no scare quotes. They aren't quite calling the president racist yet, but nearly everyone seems to feel safe enough to call the video racist now. So that's good, I guess.

I was devastated* when my parents moved to a new city and had to change their phone number. It was the last one that I still remembered!

*Not really, but you know what I mean.

UW Madison is (appropriately) freaking out after a student brought measles back from international travel. So far, it doesn't appear that anyone else was infected, but they are watching it closely.

So they want Democrats to listen to the people, not the pollsters. But there are a lot of people with a lot of different opinions out there. Talking to them all, or even a significant portion of them, would be impractical. They'll need some sort of tool to determine what people think in aggregate...

I feel like "big asterisk" was the actual origin for this one, but you rightfully identified that the joke wasn't good enough to carry the whole thing, so it got relegated to the alt text.

Every now and then, someone finds out the hard way that a word they've used for a long time has a second definition that they didn't know. I'm sure this will happen to me some day. I just hope that it doesn't happen in a massively public and embarrassing way.

Specifically, you have to be in the front to steer and in the back to brake. So he had to go down the chute with no way to really slow himself down. Then he had to move to the back of the sled in order to stop it before hitting the barrier. It could have easily ended in disaster.

In my job I regularly have to type the word "eligibility." I cannot do it at my normal typing speed. I just can't. It trips me. Up every time. I have to slow down and actually focus on every letter.

The Trump Administration claims the agents who shot Alex Pretti have been put on administrative leave, notwithstanding Greg Bovino’s prior short statement that they were simply reassigned.

There is no reason to credit this assertion as truthful.

What's the statute of limitations on these murders? If a Dem president took office January of 2029, could he open/reopen investigations into all of the crimes committed by ICE agents that were swept under the rug?
