If you are an ecologist working with Generalized Distance Sampling models, give this a check. We assess the sample size needed for reliable performance, and give advice to optimize monitoring designs. @oikosjournal.bsky.social

Performance of generalized distance sampling models with temporary emigration: a simulation study
Generalized distance sampling (GDS) models are the distance sampling equivalent of temporary emigration N-mixture models. In addition to density and the perceptibility component of detection, both co...

To estimate survival, a key parameter in population dynamics, ecologists use different statistical models to account for imperfect detection of living and dead individuals. M. Schaub and @jaumebadiaboher.bsky.social studied the performance of these models. Read more here: doi.org/10.1002/ece3...
Comparison of Bayesian Models to Estimate Survival From Dead‐Recovery Alone and Together With Live‐Encounter Data: Challenges and Opportunities
Different models in the Bayesian framework for analyzing dead-recovery data, either alone or together with live-encounter data to estimate survival, are presented and compared. Although all but one o...

1°C of global warming does NOT mean that heatwaves 'just' get hotter by 1°C.

Over large parts of the UK, global warming means that heatwaves are 3-4°C warmer, with worse consequences for people and ecosystems.
NEW JOB in #ornithology and #conservation managing two major restoration projects for #islands important for #seabirds: buff.ly/yfl1Vo2

Out now at @ecol-evol.bsky.social, we review different approaches to model mark-recapture data in #Jags and #Nimble, discuss their pros and cons, and compare their speed. We hope it will be useful to researchers willing to learn about CMR and/or speed up their models!

Paper alert! 🚨

We just published a letter in @science.org warning about the return of metallic mining in El Salvador — 7 years after becoming the only country in the world to ban it.

New socio-environmental threats are rising.

Jaume Badia-Boher et al. used a spatially explicit IPM to assess the long term dynamics of the Bonelli's eagle population. Results showed that the magnitude of birth and death processes was substantially larger than that of emigration and immigration processes. More on doi.org/10.1002/eap.....

Thanks for the work, Arjun! Could you add me please?
Looking for your first quantitative ecology post-doc? Then get in touch.

I will be co-supervising a post-doc with Lourens Swanepoel (based in SA: @Univenofficial). You will have access to many awesome data sets and the focus will be on applying hierarchical models.

1. For the past thirty years I've had the best job in the world.

I've had the opportunity to follow my curiosity; explore the workings of nature and society; mentor students and junior colleagues in the same process; and teach generations of students about it all.

‼️Now published in @esajournals.bsky.social

Statistical Rethinking was this book that made a difference in my career. I started my PhD knowing little about stats (as almost every ecologist). The book and the lectures are made in a way one can understand stats from its base and deepen into the world of Bayes. I couldn't recommend them more.
If you hate statistics like I do, then you'll love my free lectures. Putting science before statistics, 20 lectures from basics of inference & causal modeling to multilevel models & dynamic state space models. It's all free, made with love and sympathy. 🧪 #stats www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...
Really nice looking postion open here at SLU Sweden: Professor (fully tenured) in conservation ecology with focus on biodiversity linked to forest management & green infrastructure.

It is also at our Alnarp campus which is...well...rather nice & even has a castle! 🧪🌎
