The Trump administration seems poised to weaken Europe through a combination of coercion and predatory policies, including arm-twisting on trade, writes @aranchagonzalez.bsky.social. Now, the European Union is “preparing to take its future into its own hands.”

My Trade Secrets response to the tariffs.

Bad news: these tariffs cd be worse than the 1930s & the Republicans are inflicting their deep pathology on the world.

Good news: this is as yet a US trade war, not a world trade war. Others can resist following Trump's crazy road.

This. Plus the idea that richer countries help the poorest grow. The tariffs on exports from least-developed countries such as Cambodia and Laos are among the highest.

It's not just callous. It encourages migration.
One point to remember amid all the numbers talk: Trump has just thrown the core principles of the post-WWII global trade system out the window.

The most-favoured nation and national treatment principles have, in effect, been abandoned by the US.
A blanket 10% tariff on the UK; 20% on the EU; 34% on China; 46% on Vietnam; 24% on Japan; 26% on India; and much more.

This is the biggest increase in trade barriers globally in decades — quite possibly since WWII.

So Jan Mayen is hit with 10% tariffs. The island has a crew of 18 people, mostly researchers exporting nothing to nowhere.

The Heard and McDonald islands are uninhabited…

But I do feel the pain of the 1,500 Tokelau population.
