Taloudellisesta kannattavuudesta oli kaksi laskelmaa, VM:n (tappiollinen) ja Boston Consulting (selvästi kannattava). Lisäksi EU arvioi selkeästi kannattavaksi. Jostain syystä someraati on jumittanut ensimmäisessä (jonka btw VM olisi hyvin voinut julkaista dataa ja koodia myöden niin halutessaan)

This was my big news for today - six years of funding to do my own research!

I will be recruiting soon, most importantly, a Senior Research Fellow on a five year contract, plus a couple of postdocs for shorter stints: people who know EU-Silc, PSID, SOEP, or have experience on using register data

The issue is nowhere near as bad as in econ. Our recruits are mostly interdisciplinary. Candidates with econ backgroud rarely make it, simply because they have so few papers to use for evaluation. And for econ only recruits, the reputation of the supervisor has more value than in any other field

The system may already be self-correcting. Recently, many econ tenures in Finland have gone to health economics. My interpretation to this is that they are more likely to follow the pub tradition of health sciences (at least partially) and simply have a higher n of published, cited papers

Mutta ehkä jopa isompi käytännön ongelma on, että etujärjestöjen tutkimuslaitosten on vaikea (mahdotonta?) vakuuttaa suuri yleisö puolueettomuudestaan, vaikka siihen kuinka rehellisesti pyrittäisiinkin

I think most of the Nordics have used or still use some version of the tier ranking originally introduced in Norway in early 2000s or so for gov Uni funding models. Also quite often Uni internal budget allocation. The national versions are still applied in recruitments, although nowadays less often
