It’s no longer acceptable for scientists to sit on the fence

Last week I concluded my review of the year by writing “I hope 2025 is the year people worldwide wake up to the multiple threats we are facing and start to act accordingly.” Maybe my wish for the year is beginning to be fulfilled. This week the media has been full of the horrendous wildfires in Los Angeles. I don’t want to downplay how horrendous these events are and any loss of life is dreadful.

"Contrary to common beliefs, we find that misinformation isn’t universal or a general condition of our media ecosystem.

Instead, it's specifically associated with radical-right populist parties that spread misinformation as a political strategy."
Misinformation isn't random - it's strategic. 🧵

In the first cross-national comparative study, we examine 32M tweets from politicians.

We find that misinformation is not a general condition: it is driven by populist radical right parties.

1/ On 24th January the Climate and Nature Bill will be read in Parliament but – outrageously – the Labour party may not allow its MPs a free vote

It’s no exaggeration to say the fate of the world depends on urgent political action, so this is no time to be playing party politics

The ECT allows fossil fuel companies to sue governments for loss of hypothetical profits.
A 20yr sunset clause means we need to grab this chance to leave en masse with other EU countries or face huge financial risk.
The govt will decide this month - let’s help them.
