Intro post! I'm Jae (formerly Jacqueline) Koyanagi, author of the sci-fantasy novel Ascension, among other things: jaekoyanagi.com

Currently, I'm deep into writing the first book of a character-driven romantic fantasy trilogy set in a lush, unusual world where divine magic abounds.
Despite running on insufficient sleep, writing today went well. Surpassed my daily (soft) goal, and hopeful I might be able to write a bit more later. I'm trying to take my time but I'm so excited about this section of the novel!

Thank you so much for the recs! You're exactly right, that's the thing--I want non-human POV characters. Ideally a fully non-human cast, but I appreciate having at least one or two non-human POVs, such as what we get with Tchaikovsky's aliens or the aliens in The Sparrow.

Oh, speaking of Tchaikovsky! I should add that Shroud has an intriguing alien perspective as well. Loved it, couldn't put it down.

On the romance side of things, there's Strange Love by Ann Aguirre. That's about it, unless I'm forgetting something. I'm desperate to find more non-human spec fic geared toward adults! (2/2)

Tragically, very few! The only other one with zero humans I've read is Tooth and Claw by Jo Walton. Then there's the Children of Time series by Tchaikovsky that I think I saw you're reading, as well as The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. (1/2)

How incredibly cool.

I've consumed enough coffee that my blood is now 60% bean water.

One of my favorite series of all time, as a non-human enthusiast! If you haven't read it, you're missing out. I want more fantasy like *this*.
Got recc’d this one a while back by @fozmeadows.bsky.social and I just wrapped it up last night. Man what a weird, strange beautiful world this took place. More fantasy without a single human pls!! @marthawells.com made the Raksura so alien and enthralling.

Ahhh thank you, that's precisely what I was going for! ❤️

Thank you! 😊 Trying to adhere to a color palette for cohesion was challenging but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Glad you like it!

This is my first time taking a stab at making a mood board. The biggest challenge was making sure I knew for certain none of the images were AI generated, but I managed. So here's my first attempt for VFTDC.

It's the absolute best. 🤝

What a great way to put it. I struggle to connect to most people (in my case it's the autism), and reading what you had to say here made me realize my writing is me reaching out to the world in the best way I know how. Thank you so much for sharing!

What a fun weekend! Have a blast! I'd love to know what you think of I Who Have Never Known Men when you're finished.

Good luck!!

I don't even know where to begin. Inventing worlds and characters, shaping them through narrative until they feel like real, living systems and people, is immensely satisfying. As is tinkering with prose until it sings. There's nothing more fulfilling, nothing that puts me more in touch with myself.
Don't worry #pretendpanel, I won't be asking awkward questions about romance just cos tomorrow is Valentines 😉 Instead...

February 13th: What do you LOVE about writing?

YEP. All of this is precisely why the antagonist of my project is a malevolent eldritch force bent on consuming everything. Because that's what it feels like to exist right now.
So maybe my renewed interest in Lovecraftian cosmic horror is the reminder that civilization is ruled by malevolent forces we can't see or touch that are incomprehensibly powerful compared to us common mortals and they've been influencing culture from behind the veil for our entire lifetime. Maybe.
