Islands.

The first 2026 release that could
contend forYear’s Best

A ★★★★ review of Islands (2025)
The best 2026 release to date. It’s really good moviemaking.  A glance from a character hiding in the background twenty feet away. A brief few frames of a caress of someone’s back, just barely longer ...

So excited to see two @trnapper.bsky.social stories here including the novella THE HIDDEN GOD, from Asimov’s, which simply blew me away.

both a Joe Abercrombie and a Joe Hill appear in the credits for Primate. The Joe who plays a book publisher may be the real Joe. The Joe listed further down as a unit medic may be a different Joe.

How come none of the reviews mentioned this?

I didn’t love Hamnet, but I
am glad Chloe Zhao gets to have an awards season run without the pandemic-ness accompanying Nomadland. Which I saw thrice and would see again tomorrow.

Also, whatever I think of Hamnet, it knows how to end. That works.

A ★★★★★ review of Superman (1978)
This is the eldest of my comfort movies, the ones that I will go to a theatre to see pretty much any time I can.  It doesn’t hold up 100% as well as the 1980 crop of The Shining and The Empire Strikes...

my goal for 2026 is Elf inspired. A week ago I wanted to be a plain old cotton-headed ninny muggins. But with a week to reflect I realize I need to be the best TPS Form wielding cotton-headed ninny muggins that Santa and his elves could ever envision.

It’s great seeing @dirtbagqueer.rocks’s ONE OF THE BOYS on this list. And this review is 🔥!

“One of the Boys shows why sports can be so important for young people—including, of course, transgender youth just doing the day-to-day teenage work of becoming who they are.”
