I learned a lot from the National Academy of Sciences "Implications of AI-Related Data Center Electricity Use and Emissions" workshop this week. Here's some observations and an attempt to describe the challenge for regulators & policymakers to power AI's future. What do folks think? please add/argue
Powering & cooling #AI #datacenters remains too inefficient. Water demand for projected cooling needs is starting to exceed supply in more locations. Should #EPA fund #EnergyStar and apply its successful approach to data center energy and water use to save $Billions and achieve global AI leadership?

Four EOs for nuclear call for 400 GWs new nuclear capacity by 2050, doubling the 200 GWs in the Nov 2024 U.S. Nuclear Deployment Framework issued by the White House. At same time, Trump Admin has been hamstringing new nuclear. If RE+BESS+gas is going to bridge to SMR, consistency is sorely needed.

I can only think of beneficial economic reasons to maintain the EPA Energy Star program. Not the least of which is making the cost of appliance ownership more transparent and lower.
So, logically, I should have guessed Energy Star will be going up on the chopping block.

Read or heard some version of this five times today in business media and NY Times as pros try to say quotable things for their paycheck:

‘We may have reached peak policy/investment uncertainty’

I have a suspicion we haven’t experienced uncertainty yet.

This might be the fastest a President has ever burned through their honeymoon period of high approval ratings. Let’s see what happens when in the same day people get laid off / defunded, they can’t get Medical coverage, and their kid(s) comes home hungry due to no school lunch.

www.mlb.com/video/tony-g... great memories, my two favorite players growing up playing little league. I pushed the envelope stealing bases trying to run like Rickey and trying to hit with the discipline of Tony. Grateful to have been in the stands for many of their milestones. May they rest in peace
Gwynn’s farewell, Rickey’s 3,000th | 12/22/2024
Relive Tony Gwynn's final game in the big leagues, as the stars aligned with another magical moment in MLB history, Rickey Henderson's 3,000th hit

Anyone know how local policy commonly addresses excessively loud cars on public roads? There are 2 sometimes 3 different cars that drive by my house most nights between 11p to 1am, wake up my son, and then he comes into our room to sleep. They’ve been waking him up for the past 3 years.

FYI - I learned from my first thread on bsky that if you are long-winded like me and write the maximum thread length, the last 3 posts in your thread will not appear to a user unless they click on the 4th to last post in the thread. So don't bury the lead!

I’m in the market for an induction range. Consumer Reports says “80 percent of the induction ranges currently in our ratings perform well enough for us to recommend them compared with less than half of the gas ranges we’ve evaluated.” What induction range would you recommend and why?

Buckle up or get in the pilots chair! Goldman Sachs predicts computing will be 8% to 11% of U.S. power demand by 2030. Could require 40GW to 240GW of new generation depending on power supply mix, high end is wind + solar only (per Andrew Chen's NAS ppt today).
