It’s International Women’s Day 2025 and gender inequality and health inequalities still have major consequences for neurodivergent women and girls. Whilst there have been improvements (e.g. the narrowing gap of numbers of men and women diagnosed), there is still a long way to go. 🧵

I am so tired of seeing how both the education and healthcare system fails neurodivergent people over and over again.

Read this recently and related heavily, even let my therapist borrow my copy 😅, and I definitely recommend it for any self diagnosed or late diagnosed people. Really, everyone should read it just so more people learn about the autistic experience. Thank you so much for writing about your experience!

‘How being diagnosed with autism at 16 saved my life’ in @TheSun today ✍🏻

As my book and the article talks about, it’s not just the diagnosis. It’s the understanding of myself that came with that, the understanding from others and the adjustments I made in my life.

I started counselling again two weeks ago and that’s okay…sometimes we need space to talk and process things. Needing a bit of extra support is nothing to be ashamed of. 🩵

Thinking about the time I had a full-blown meltdown in my year 7 maths class because I found my teacher so scary and I had left my protractor at home. I cried hysterically, hyperventilating. And now thinking about how, as an adult, when I forget things, no-one tells me off.

When I read about how autistic people often don’t recognise authority (which is common!), I think about how I, another autistic person, am the complete opposite. I’ve always been terrified of authority & terrified of getting into trouble. Autism really is everything in extremes.

Why is it okay for neurotypical people to watch football matches every weekend but if an autistic person wants to watch planes every weekend this is pathologised?
