Thread of my 2026 reading. The goal is to read more books. I'm calmer when I read more!
Never give advice is the best advice.

Have I slipped up and accidentally started recklessly slinging advice around? Yes, yes I have.

Thankfully, every day is a new day to seize the opportunity to not give someone advice 😤

A vacuum cleaner might actually successfully work as a paper weight or a fly swatter: this in no way makes that their primary function or purpose, and if it accidentally does one of those things it’s a coincidence. That’s what the police actually helping someone is like

On my way to the Supreme Court where I'll be proud to support 15-year-old Becky Pepper-Jackson, West Virginia's only transgender athlete, as she opposes the state's effort to ban her from playing as herself.

Win or lose, Becky and her family are heroes for standing up for what's right

I hate this. I want to see bus drivers as friendly to cyclists, but I have had enough bad experiences with bus drivers when I'm biking to know they are often a foe. I hope this cyclist will be okay.

This has to be an omen for an excellent 2026 Guardians season.

Maybe I'll like my banana peanut butter hemp seed cookies a little on the crispy side.

This could be a big day for me. A new way of baking!

Hmm how long was the timer I'm using for baking accidentally put on pause? 2 mins? 10 mins? 45 mins? Who can say.

I don't enjoy biking on icy roads or in high snow. I try to view winter as my off season and enjoy my trips by bus. It's not always easy to take this positive attitude. I would much prefer to bike every day!
This is why I bristle a little when people say winter is just an “excuse” not to bike.

Winter (specifically, snow/ice) is different from rain or hills. It’s not something you can tackle on your own.

You’re reliant on your city to plow and maintain the bike paths well.
Just a reminder that on the bike & footh paths here in Oulu 🇫🇮, 2 cm of new snowfall must always be gone within 3 hours, on entire 166 km main 🚲🚶 network, 24/7. Maintenance needs to be fast, reliable & efficient 👌 Join our Urbanism Masterclasses to learn more! 🤗

During my Match dot Com days, I had some weird interactions. There was the guy who I went on one coffee date with who responded to my "I don't think we are a good match" email by telling me I was a whore who cheats on everyone she dates.

I don't know. It's wild what some men try to get away with.

Damn the Netherlands is such a cool place

"A ban on keeping cats with folding ears and naked cats, such as the Sphynx and the Scottish Fold, will go into effect in the Netherlands from 1 January 2026. The government has taken this decision to prevent animal suffering.."

Mark Teixeira did play for the MLB cop team the Rangers and the Yankees so his public genuflecting to ICE makes a lot of sense.

Yes yes! People must have their basic needs met and be able to enjoy life.

This is seriously amazing stuff Mamdani is doing. We can create a politics of caring!
“When I speak about making our city more affordable, my vision is not limited to the homes that we live in or the child care that we’re making universal — it’s also a vision where we make it possible for working people to afford lives of joy, of art, of rest, of expression.”

I had this exact same thought.

And while I think we could find strong evidence that meek me is tougher than ICE guys, I always de-escalate situations with drivers.

Unlike cops, I don't escalate situations or turn mundane ones into total hellscapes.
As someone who has multiple dangerous interactions with a car every time I ride my bike I have zero patience for this bullshit from JD Vance and Kristi Noem about the agent feeling threatened by a car turning around. The average bike commuter has more courage than trigger-happy Jonathan Ross.
