My favourite story of the week. Houses flying St George's flags were sent a letter saying "patriotic households displaying the country's flag will temporarily house refugees". To opt out people were given a premium rate phone no. to sexual entertainment services! 😂

All in favour of shared spaces that get people out and about and it you’re going to burn money on gambling then yeah, better to do so with a friendly person on hand. But still some incredible “men’s mental health” lobbying against a gambling tax in the Sunday Times. www.thetimes.com/article/f115...

Many migrant workers who came to Qatar to build the 2022 WC infrastructure found themselves jobless after the tournament. @josimarfootball.bsky.social reveals how some of them have been recruited by the Russian army, are fighting and die on the Ukrainian front.

If you ever had any doubts of what a shit hole the Tory party has left us in, this all you need to look at.

And to expect change overnight, or even within 5 years, is fanciful
Homelessness crisis in the UK.

Outcome of real wage/benefit cuts, never-ending austerity, sale of council homes, emasculation of local councils, lack of affordable/social housing, corporate profiteering, no rent controls, appeasing corporations/rich.

Asif Aziz almost forced out London’s Prince Charles Cinema earlier this year. Is he trying the same again with Picturehouse Central - and is another major central London cinema under threat from the same landlord? www.londoncentric.media/p/picturehou...
Asif Aziz almost forced out one West End cinema. Is he doing it again?
To undermine one central London cinema may be regarded as a misfortune; to do it twice two looks like carelessness.

something I keep thinking about and which I can't make up my mind on is: were swathes of the right, centre-right and, in some cases, the centre, full of racists hiding their beliefs for decades, or are these people all incredibly suggestible? neither answer is good!
large parts of UK politics are swinging far-right with very, very frightening speed, and racists are getting increasingly open about expressing their bigotry.
it's "cool" that every conservative pundit in the UK basically seems to want to turn the country into Norsefire

One thing that's striking about Ozzy Osborne's death is how difficult it is to imagine the music industry producing another figure like him. The barriers to working class people are so great, and there's a related attitude to culture that is neutered as a result.
