Taking my wife up, carried her to Charing Cross, and there showed her the Italian motion, much after the nature of what I showed her a while since in Covent Garden. Their puppets here are somewhat better, but their motions not at all.

Because this is a short working week, lots of coworkers have taken the remaining three days off too and the office is incredibly quiet. This is wonderful for me.

This is more about the recent past but it holds true for any period of history. Looking at reports on what "normal" people left behind after their death in e.g. the 17th c., and it is amazing how many people owned... one tankard, a stool, a bed, maybe, and a table? If that. Furniture was a luxury.
It is genuinely hard for most people to grasp how poor the past was.
