the point of the ballroom obvs has nothing to do with aesthetics. it's to create an architectural structure to honor the patronage networks that currently dominate US politics. previous WH venues hosted maybe a couple of hundred people; this hosts nearly 1,000 rich donors.

If a temporary resident of the White House can totally demolish the East Wing to build a gaudy ballroom, without any authority, approval, or regulation, he can tear down the rest of the White House to build a Walmart. I don’t know anyone wanting to see today’s US, my brother just canceled a 4 week tour after our SiL was harassed at the border for a couple of hours bc as a US citizen why she doesn’t live there, married an Aussie 50 years ago…
