October is Banned Book Month. What are you reading? I read the insightful "All Boys Aren't Blue" by @iamgmjohnson.bsky.social. A memoir of personal essays about growing up black and queer. Highly recommend if you have a youngster in your life who is both or either.

@iamgmjohnson.bsky.social author of “All Boys Aren’t Blue” is prepared to fight for their book, books everywhere, & all readers. The banning & the commentary won’t stop them. “I am built with a different type of will & a different type of ancestor watching over me.” #Velshi #VelshiBannedBookClub
Velshi Banned Book Club: Revisiting ‘All Boys Aren’t Blue’ by George M. Johnson
“All Boys Aren’t Blue” hit two major milestones this month. One is an anniversary: the novel turned five years old. Five remarkable years of inspiring writers, creating empathy, and giving readers that safe place to land. The other is grimmer. According to the American Library Association, “All Boys Aren’t Blue” was the single most banned work of literature in America last year. It isn’t an honor. It isn’t a selling mechanism. It is a tragedy. “All Boys Aren’t Blue” has become more than just a power story or a beautiful work of literature – it’s become a symbol, representative of free speech, of access to literature, and of resistance. In five years, Johnson has become one of the most important voices in the fight against censorship. “All Boys Aren’t Blue” has gone from a remarkable debut memoir to one of the most critical works of literature in the contemporary American canon. The sort of book that imparts a different lesson onto you every single time you reread it. “There are days that are heavier than others,” says Johnson, “but it’s the messages I get from so many people that have been saved by the texts.” The attacks and band “could have stopped me from writing…But it didn’t.”

George M Johnson - All Boys Aren’t Blue (2020)
Johnson describes this as ‘memoir manifesto’. It’s the story of a queer black boy growing up in New Jersey.
It’s currently the most banned & challenged book in the USA which makes it more vital than ever to be read & shared.

On #WorldBookDay, we honor the books that empower, educate, and inspire. The book bans we’re up against are tools of oppression — designed to erase truth and silence marginalized voices. LDF won’t stand for it.

This book was well-written and thoughtful. The huge pushback (including in my former district) is symptomatic of exactly why we need this book. For people to be seen and for others to see them as an entire person.
All Boys Aren’t Blue is officially the most challenged book in the United States. Today I’m reminded that silence has never saved me. So I’m going to continue to speak and fight! #allboysarentblue
