Merry Christmas all.
A time for hope and togetherness which has been acutely felt for our crew this year.
I hope you get to spend quality time relaxing with those who matter to you.

Structural gingerbread is not a thing. Kids insisted on a domed structure with curved walls -an observatory being hit by the Christmas comet it was observing.

Just to be clear, baking curved biscuit structures in the oven is nigh on impossible.

Yep. For me it was fatigue and cough for 6 months and then a wheeze later.
Diagnosed variably as long COVID, Asthma, Sarcoid then stage IV NSCLC.
Think of lung cancer early.

Currently wading through all the old family recipes, as I do at this time of year, working out which ones to honour.
Messages like this of my Nana to my Mum fill my heart. They’re so precious and I can almost hear them busily passed on Christmas morning.

The risk of peri-operative peripheral nerve injuries in Victoria is lower than historical estimates and appears to be decreasing with time.

The use of administrative databases allows for inclusion of denominator data = more accurate estimate of risk in rare events.

Incidence of peri-operative nerve injuries appears to be decreasing over time - a result of meticulous attention to pressure areas? Increasing use of ultrasound for nerve blocks? What do you think?

This is just all gold. Stop everything now and read about hippos.
I have been doing entirely too much earnest posting about deep things recently, I need to do a proper thread about hippo testicles or something just to keep myself sane.

Oh by the way hippos have migratory testicles.

Lung cancer doesn’t discriminate. It’s hitting more women every year and now kills more than breast cancer—yet funding still lags far behind. Help push research forward.

Postoperative sore throat has an incidence of up to 62%.

The current literature lacks high-quality randomised controlled trials on treatments that prevent a complication that is of importance to patients and their recovery.

I’m sorry but why aren’t there 100 million people in the streets in the US right now protesting the fact that one of their national assets has been completely defaced?
Imagine if this was Buckingham palace, the Beehive or dare I say it… the Reichstag?

This is a must watch.
A kind of safety 2 approach to economics and governance.
Refreshing to hear about what works rather than a constant whinging about how we fail to reach our potential.
I was just in Australia giving the Boyer Lecture. It's an economist's love letter to his home country. It's also relevant to the current American moment, as the main point is to link institutions with prosperity.
