Eyes locked forward, not because I see anything, but because the script says intensity. I am smoldering. I am brooding. I am absolutely unsure why everyone is staring at me. The coat? Untouched. Windswept by nature, not styling. This fur has range. It can do comedy. It can do drama. I am pleased to report that I have officially begun celebrating New Year’s Eve, and I have done so with dignity, athleticism, and absolutely no understanding of calendars. As you can see, I am charging forward through the snow with my mouth open in what humans often misinterpret as “a smile,” but which is actually my ceremonial New Year’s Joy Vent. This is how one releases the emotional weight of the past year—by galloping directly at one’s human while snow flies into one’s chest fur like confetti. My tail is raised and waving in broad, confident arcs, signaling optimism, excitement, and the possibility that treats may be forthcoming because it is a “special occasion.” Behind me, my sister is conducting a separate but equally important New Year’s ritual known as Alert Barking at Absolutely Nothing. This is vital work. Someone must notify the forest that the year is ending. It might already know, but we do not take chances. She is facing uphill, where all serious announcements should be directed. The setting is perfect: snow for dramatic effect, pine trees for ambiance, and enough scattered rocks to remind me that despite my enthusiasm, physics still applies. I am mid-stride, one paw lifted, ears slightly back—not from fear, but from speed. I am fast. I am joyful. I am convinced this run has purpose, even if that purpose changes every three seconds. In summary, I am Bleu. I am ringing in the New Year by running happily toward the people I love, inhaling cold air, ignoring resolutions, and trusting that whatever comes next will involve food, sticks, and another run just like this one.
