Drifting in a kayak on Kintla Lake at sunset , Long Knife Peak rose across the water like a serrated crest catching the last of the day’s light. The western sun angled low, striking the ridge and turning its blade-like edges a warm gold while the slopes below settled into deep blues and greens. The reflection stretched across the still lake, the shapes of the cliffs softening into wavering bands of color that followed every tiny movement of my kayak. The dark line of standing timber reaching toward the point where the mountain’s shadow touched the water. Farther out, the whole scene held a sense of evening settling in — not dramatic, just steady, the kind of calm that lets the peaks show their contours without hurry. The lake, the light, and Long Knife Peak all aligned for a moment, and from the surface of Kintla it felt like I was paddling through a mirror that led straight into the mountain’s face.

In the bright Montana snow, Bleu and Ruby look like two fluffy Olympians competing in the prestigious Stick-Wrestling Winter Classic, a sport they have invented, perfected, and taken very seriously. Bleu — eyes squinted in bliss, ears flapping like victory flags — is clearly convinced he is the undefeated champion of the northern territories. The stick is wedged proudly in his jaws, and he’s already imagining his name engraved on a golden retriever trophy. Ruby, however, has entered the arena with the energy of a cinnamon-colored comet. Her tail is a blur of determination, her stance pure athletic drama. She has declared, silently but boldly, “Today, brother… I take the title.” Snow sprays. Paws scramble. The stick wobbles like a referee who’s had enough. And somewhere in the cold, crisp air you can almost hear their simultaneous battle cry:Mine!

Prairie Pasqueflower (Pulsatilla patens), also known in Montana as the Prairie Crocus, Cut-leaf Anemone, or Eastern Pasqueflower. Early-spring bloomer that often appears while snow still lingers. A single, delicate wildflower rises from a forest floor thick with tan pine needles. The bloom has six pale lavender petals, each softly veined with fine, darker lines that draw the eye inward. The petals curve gently open, forming a shallow cup around a bright, densely packed yellow center made of tiny stamens that radiate like a miniature sun. The flower’s stem and sepals are covered in fine, silvery hairs, giving the plant a soft, downy appearance.
