The world feels rough right now

So please enjoy this shrimp, filmed off Cozumel, Mexico. It may be a larval reef shrimp, but we don’t know what species or how long it lives or what it eats. The world is still full of wonder and beauty and mystery.

If I for some reason ever pass
And they try to make my wife a roommate
Or a shadow in my life
Let it be known she was my heart.
She was my everything.
Not a shadow
But the whole sun.

I bristle a bit inside at compliments like "gifted" and "talented" because they imply that mastery and expertise is more a matter of luck than of effort.

That's NOT TRUE! The source of true mastery is STUBBORNNESS, NOT FATE!! DO A THING TEN THOUSAND TIMES AND YOU CAN BE INCREDIBLE!!! ✨✨✨✨✨

A picture is worth 1000 words...

This appeared on the BBC News today, showing the increase in solar electric generation in the UK.

Not sure who produced it, but genuinely think this is a genius piece of scientific communication - the construct and choice of colour scale is near-perfect.

Chapeau!

Phoroncidia americana, the weird little lumpy theridiids who hunt with a single silk line composed of tiny sticky balls loaded with moth pheromones. I love them.

Today I have something really special for you guys! Not too far from the caiman I posted recently, I found something MIND BLOWING

This is a butterfly pupa, and it mimics the head of a snake. And not just any snake, but specifically the head of a boa snake!!! Probably Opsiphanes, an owlet butterfly.

“So this exciting fossil discovery of bees nesting in bone cavities, and in caves, serves as a good reminder that when it comes to evolution, bees will keep on being the bees they need to be.” Happy that @cnn.com Science used my quote about this amazing fossil find. www.cnn.com/2025/12/17/s... 🧪🐝🪹🦴🪨
Discovery of ancient bee nests in fossils points to a never-before-seen behavior | CNN
In a Caribbean cave, researchers discovered hundreds of fossils with bee nests within them. It is the first time this behavior has been recorded, a new study finds.

I should probably finish up the one on widows first, huh. -w-
Or maybe I could do swallowtails... 🤔

UGH there are so many cool bugs to write books about!!!
I'm trying to decide between hardback ticks and orbweaver spiders for my next book project.

A guide to orbweavers would be more fun but it would take me longer to complete. A guide to ticks would directly save more lives but the 50 identical Ixodes species look absolutely miserable to illustrate.
