I know @garyseconomics.bsky.social is primarily focused on UK economics, but on days like today I'd love to hear his thoughts on the economic / tariff circus happening in the United States right now.

if 90% of the population still got its news from 3 tv stations "the president elect got congress to cut child cancer research" would lead his political party into at least 8 years of darkness but unfortunately the internet has a few downsides

So about ten years ago I found a small network of bots on Reddit dedicated to spreading hate. The thing about it is that these weren't even responding to political topics - they were just responding to random keywords with insults and hate.

The same bots are now here. You should understand why. 🧵
this is kind of a niche issue but: if you are getting weird and hostile responses that feel a little off, there are some folks on here making accounts that automatically reply to large quantities of posts in a vaguely hostile manner. you can ignore them, and also, it's not personal

I don't know who needs to know this, but Pro Publica has an online thing that will format a letter to your US health insurance company to demand the records behind a claim denial. (which the insurance is then legally required to provide in most cases)

A simple experiment you can do is buy a server, set up a website with nothing on it, then look at the access logs. All day, every day, there are random systems just blasting vulnerabilities at every device on the internet. Analysts call it "background noise", executives call it "cyber attacks".

When I bite my tongue while chewing food, it’s usually because there is a song stuck in my head and I’m chewing to the beat. Is this sad to admit?

I bought a ton of 3d printing stuff for Christmas and it feels like a mistake. Do I have time for this hobby?

Another year, another Spotify Wrapped with @c418.org as my top artist…. but this time I’m sharing on Bluesky.

Thanks for the hours. I’ve accomplished a lot with your music my ears (mostly Excursions)!

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas kind of feels like a post-apocalyptic love letter to a time before climate change and war.

I wonder how much modern societal angst is a result of cell phones, both in terms of time wasted and negativity.

Every right-leaning person I’ve tried to get interested in Bluesky quietly dismisses it because they think it’s some sort of liberal echo chamber; despite the fact that I’ve just been emphasizing feed control. Ideologically you’d think they’d love that - Total freedom & no propaganda. 🤔

I can’t imagine the level of “managing up” required in any new American presidential administration.

Think of an experienced military general just trying to nudge the president in a sensible direction despite their superior knowledge in combat, diplomacy, and classified information.

Insomnia / Tin Foil Hat Time
If an American “deep state” shadow government didn’t already exist in some capacity, some people are certainly thinking about making one now.

I’m sure there are plenty of people who are not interested in getting opinions from the incoming administration.

Spending a month on Bluesky has created a whole new model of a fight we need to be having right now. Not liberal vs. conservative or whatever, but respect vs manipulation.

I am tired of being manipulated everywhere I go. That’s why I like it here, I feel like I’m in charge for once.

When talking about climate change I’ve started to incorporate a quick physical explanation on the basics before getting into it, like “CO2, a molecule that absorbs heat like a black t-shirt,…” or “carbon dioxide, which is opaque to infrared light,…”

Let's talk about peeing in space.

Several people, in response to my NY Times essay, have said that women couldn't go into space because we lacked the technology for them to pee in space.

I still find it bizarre that the people who tend to hate pronoun usage are the ones with rigid views on gender. Seems like they would love entering their own pronouns and forcing other people to pick a label so they can judge them.

Though I am still wary of the consequences of the election, I feel more zen about the average American when I realize this decision was primarily driven by emotion, not logic.
