Over nearly three years, @mariamelba.bsky.social and I have examined hundreds of fatal domestic violence shootings in TN to understand how often they are committed by someone legally barred from having a gun, and the gaps victims fall through in the system. 2/7
Guns in Dangerous Hands Archives
Tennessee has one of the highest rates of women killed by men in the country. Loose gun laws and weak enforcement make it easier for dangerous people to keep their guns, even if they are barred from h...

Of note, breakfast and lunch are free for Baltimore County school children
November 7, 2025 at 12:22 AM
Seems like a no-brainer to feed children. Additional plus is that caregivers don't need to pack a lunch!
School lunches get a bad rap, but they're healthier than the average packed lunch. And making them free for all amplifies academic and health benefits for low-income kids by removing stigma/shame.

So I'm glad Colorado voted to raise taxes on high-income households to make school meals free for all.

A 2020 study found that Amazon—which shares owner Jeff Bezos with The Washington Post—is one of the largest employers of people on SNAP.
As SNAP funds froze, mayors and governors have pledged to supplement the missing federal assistance, while federal judges ruled Friday that the Trump administration should use contingency funds to keep food aid running despite the government shutdown.
Uncertainty hits after vulnerable Americans woke up to a SNAP freeze
Amid a benefits pause, nonprofit groups plan to work extra hours to get food out to vulnerable residents, and local community members are also stepping up.

This is an amazing resource
A few years ago, The Trace launched the Atlas of American Gun Violence, a map that allows users to see where people are being shot around the United States. In the past, the Atlas has had limitations to the search.

In this updated version we’ve tried to improve on those.
Where Are People Being Shot in America?
The Trace’s Atlas of American Gun Violence has been updated to allow you to search by address, county, congressional district, type of shooting — and to download maps.

Non-fatal shootings, relative to murder cases, have a higher likelihood of catching the shooter. Knowing the frequency of NFS cases can illuminate the need for greater focus.
New this week: I wrote about the very big change that the FBI recently announced very quietly - NIBRS now allows agencies to report non-fatal shooting data for the first time.
