If you’re explaining this to folks, also relevant to point out that not just anybody can apply. You have to be at an institution that does research, like a university, and have demonstrated your qualifications to run a lab.

So that’s not 4% of all comers. It’s 4% of established cancer researchers
We need to do good science communication around this. The payline is the percent of submitted grants that will be funded. So for cancer, 4%.
I had to look up what a payline was. I wish I hadn't.

Context is important, see 👇
There are so many ways one could provide context for this data.

For example, in the last five years universities have received 52-55% of their research funding from the federal government. That's the lowest percentage since the 1950s. 1/x ncses.nsf.gov/surveys/high...
How Universities Became So Dependent on the Federal Government
For decades, universities got billions in federal dollars for research. The relationship was mutually beneficial, until President Trump decided it wasn’t.

Nebraska is going to get crushed between Tariffs and Medicaid cuts. They have to balance their state budget and it looks like at least a 200m shortfall this year. BEFORE tariff impacts.

And Nebraska Republicans here ! Curious what you think

Friendly reminder: if you are waiting on something from a US-based scientist/reviewer/editor, please realize that we're barely making it through each day putting out non-stop fires and trying not to collapse into tears. We're trying our best, but things will take longer right now. Give grace.

Pedro - congratulations. This is an elegant experiment with impressive results. Very cool!
I dont think this could have been done outside NIH. Our in vivo resources are unparalleled and so is the community.
Comments are very welcome and you can

Every tax dollar allocated to the NIH returns 254% in economic growth.
6. The policy does not just affect funding going forward. All existing NIH grants will have their indirect rates cut to 15% as of today, the date of issuance.

For a large university, this creates a sudden and catastrophic shortfall of hundreds of millions of dollars against already budgeted funds.

254% return on investment
NIH funded research benefits your community even if it doesn’t (yet!) directly benefit you. Each $ invested in NIH yields significantly higher return on investment (average 254%) than the same $ invested in “defense”.

Yes, find the 3 days in your schedule, even if it means blocking it off months in advance.
Academic writing tip: momentum is key - getting 2-3 consecutive days focused on a project will yield more progress than working on something two hours a day, once or twice week. Schedule accordingly - get other things done so you have those consecutive days.
