As a leftist person who lives in a homeless shelter (and likely will continue to do so for a year or more), there's a weird sort of feeling when a panhandler asks me for money. Are we bros? Are we comrades? Would they even care that I also am unhoused and asking me for money is pointless?

As unhoused people are brutalized, criminalized, and vilified nationwide—and with so much invested in obscuring the root causes of homelessness—it's important to be clear: people are homeless because they have been deprived of housing they can afford.

I don't have any trans family members—but it still makes me irate. I see it as a huge red flag, a sign you are unprincipled and untrustworthy. And I'm not alone.
