UK govt has ‘got the balance right’ on tax, says Rachel Reeves.

Not addressed Tory legacy.

Poorest 20% pay higher proportion of income in taxes than the richest 20%.

Capital gains & dividends taxed at lower rates than wages, recipients don't pay NIC

Mansions and modest homes pay same council tax

Important stuff from @positivemoneyuk.bsky.social.

A windfall tax on banks could raise £11 billion - money that could be invested in our public services and a proper social security system. Money that could help lift children out of poverty.

A windfall tax on banks on banks could raise more than *£11 billion*

That's enough to cover the cost of the welfare u-turn AND scrapping the two-child benefit cap

This is a message to Keir Starmer.

Almost 40,000 MORE children are missing out on the support they need because of the two-child limit than there were last year.

We urge the UK Government to scrap the two-child limit now.

Don't let anyone tell you that there's no money, we are a £2.5 trillion economy.

The 50 richest families in Britain are worth £500 billion, half of Britain's wealth. Taxing the richest 1% in one year would give us £25 billion.

What is wrong with that choice? #WealthTax

Every Disabled organisation is against this bill. Slashing the Universal Credit health element in half, pushing more Disabled people is unconscionable - especially when the Government could easily tax the rich.

❌MPs must vote against the bill today!

MPs and much of the media have spun a false narrative about tonight’s Universal Credit vote. The PIP pause has created the myth the government has fully u-turned on its disability cuts. But £2 billion is about to be pulled from the sickest and poorest people in the country.

After govt's 11th hour 59th minute climbdown over PIP it's time for Reeves to go back to the drawing board and look for fairer and more sensible ways to raise money - like a wealth tax on multi-millionaires and billionaires to raise up to £24bn a year

There are still big cuts to UC health support which need addressing.

And the process to get here was incredibly badly thought out and damaging.

But the DWP's genuine reforms survived, whilst HMT's biggest cuts were defeated.

That's the right outcome.

The true measure of a society is how it treats its most vulnerable.

Aside from the economic and procedural arguments (of which there are many) it just isn’t morally right to push hundreds of thousands of disabled people into poverty.

The cuts must be scrapped.

Tonight’s huge climbdown is testament to the countless disabled people who have tirelessly fought these cuts. Yes, UC was a loss and there’s more to do on PIP, but let’s not underplay this: a government with a vast majority has been forced to u-turn. Because of the disabled community.

Why don't we support the Government's concessions on benefit cuts? Because:
Benefits are already so low that 27% of UK working-age Disabled people live in poverty.
Future claimants will face the same high costs as we do.
Tell your MP to vote against the bill in full:
