Imagine you were about to appear at a writers' festival to talk about your first book... then the whole thing fell apart.

I wanted to find debut authors who almost talked at Adelaide Writers' Week. These are 21 folks I've identified so far but *please* let me know who I've missed or mixed up.

How to lose a writers' week festival in six days - and have the Premier facing a defamation action to top it off.

One of the all-time classic own-goals. 😐

I may be entirely mistaken but it seems likely a lot of people are being wrongly led to believe a person is linked to terrorism, or has approved of terrorism, or was intending to use 'hateful rhetoric', and a competent defamation lawyer might like to take this one for a light gallop.
Holy shit, this way beyond the pale.

Even Kramer's famously incompetent lawyer, Jackie Chiles, would've found this "outrageous, egregious, preposterous". 😂
Wild reporting from Bloomberg. Jeanine Pirro apparently freelanced the subpoenas and criminal investigation of Jerome Powell.

Of all the enshittification that has happened to cars over the past two decades, large touchscreens are by far the worst offender.

No surprise it was Elon (in the Model S) that started this dumb-ass trend. It saves manufacturers money. And risks lives.

Yes, those big touchscreens in cars are dangerous and buttons are coming back
We know texting while driving can kill – but research shows touchscreen controls in a car can be just as distracting.

The Adelaide Festival Corporation Board has effectively disintegrated.

Can't say I'm surprised, but they (or others) brought this upon themselves.

Signs of heat stress everywhere 🥵, including gum trees dropping whole limbs to conserve energy. 😳

Is why you should *never* camp or picnic directly under a gum tree in summer, especially after extreme heat. #TrailRide #VicFires

I am nowhere close to the nearest of the #VicFires but it's as dry as I've seen this trail in years.

Little wonder the recent heat + gusty winds have caused so much damage. And heartache.

The list of withdrawn participants is getting longer by the hour.

At this point, questions need to be asked of the Board members. Questions of diligence, competence and undue influence on decision-making, if any.

The Adelaide Writers' Week was cratered by the Adelaide Festival Corporation Board of 7 members (and one state government observer).

The Board owns the social, cultural and economic damage to Adelaide 💯.
I know it’s 9am on a Saturday but you would have thought 100 writers boycotting Adelaide Writers Week, ultimately torpedoing the festival, would warrant a reply from the board, the government… something?
January 9, 2026 at 10:42 PM
What a howler of a decision.

The Board of the Adelaide Festival must've been more concerned about placating elements outside SA, because Adelaide is (despite the many churches) a historically progressive city.

They *badly* misread the room on this one.
