As COP30 (UN meeting on climate change) begins, 10 years into the Paris Agreement, US emissions are about as high as ever, due substantially to methane pollution from oil and gas systems. The US is the world's worst cumulative climate polluter, nearly 2x China, and is not participating in COP30.
New paper. I wish this wasn't the case, but most progress on reducing US greenhouse gas emissions is likely spurious. Why? EPA underestimates methane emissions from oil and gas. Relevant today as Repubs vote to gut IRA's methane monitoring/mitigation program. 🧵

The mayor of Tamworth Council is a very old mate of Barnaby Joyce's and a National party member

No surprises this backward collection of red-necks drags their council to court on their ratepayers' money to oppose a wind farm - and even then can't get their legal arguments right
Tamworth Council went to court to try and stop a wind farm. It didn’t go well. Tamworth Council argued that the wind turbines would be too big for local roads. The judge pointed out there is no approval needed to drive on a public road reneweconomy.com.au/youve-got-to...

We are going to live in a world where the the marginal cost of electricity is very close to zero
Australia has so much electricity from solar power that it is going to start offering free electricity to everyone for at least three hours during the day as the wholesale price of power goes negative

Who are UN climate talks really serving? 🤔

What we see:

🚩 Big polluters as sponsors
🚩 Fossil fuel executives in presidency teams
🚩 Multinationals included in negotiation
🚩 Fossil fuel phase-out missing from the agenda
🚩 Spotlight on corporate-driven "solutions" e.g. carbon offsets

FWIW: the idea of "gas as transition fuel" is a very old industry talking point. While researching my book, Slick, I found industry figures talking about the need to treat gas as a "bridging fuel" starting around the mid-90s when the gas producers joined APPEA.
"Exports of Australian gas carry “substantial risks” of slowing the move to cleaner energy in Asian countries, according to a confidential report for the Western Australian government that undermines the government’s own narrative that the industry helps cut global emissions."

The fact this report was withheld during the North West Shelf approval is very WA Labor.

I wonder if the report covers off on how gas exports increase power prices and rob industrial capacity from the WA transition.

Good to see an Australian insurer doing this work. IAG 👏

It’s been an ok couple of years for cat claims, but it’s not going to last. Insurance is going to get more expensive while covering less.

Meanwhile some insurers and banks keep enabling fossil fuel projects. Not AIG.
