Ok one more Valentine’s post! (Mainly because the salsa version of “Die with a Smile” has been glued to my brain from the superbowl lol).

Perucetus & Dromornis.

It’s apparently World Whale Day, so I introduce you to the Indo-Pacific finless porpoise. Supposedly, it can click up to 200 times/second to find prey in murky waters. There are other species of finless porpoise in the same genus, but all are threatened.

this grade of early cetaceans lived until the end of the eocene, around 33.9 million years ago, whereupon the modern clades odontoceti (the toothed whales) and mysticeti (the baleen whales) diverged from them

although still commonly used in scientific literature, the validity of 'basilosauridae' has been called into question, with some authors considering them to represent a paraphyletic assemblage of early cetaceans rather than a monophyletic clade

basilosaurus and its relatives are united by several shared traits, such as tiny hindlimbs, elongated bodies, mosasaur-like skulls, and teeth that were heterodont (different shapes and sizes)

happy #worldwhaleday! tens of millions of years before the time of sperm whales and orcas, an early whale named basilosaurus was the ocean's mammalian apex predator, reaching lengths of up to 20 metres

🕹️ • Rayman (1995) - 7/10

A game I should love, but don't. A game I should hate, but don't. A mix between respecting it's craft and ambition, and also not given how much of a pain in the ass half the time to control this well. Still not high on it.

I like a little bit now then I used to. At least.

🎬 • Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie (2025) - 9/10

As good as the show, which means it's amazing. Retains what made the series special while also putting these men to their highest stakes. Got real close to crying there. Somehow. Really so.

2008 is kinda cool, isn't it? Or at least was then.

🎬 • Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die (2025) - 8/10

Is it 2025 or 2026? Either way, unhinged Gore Verbinski at his most Verbinski yet. Might be a bit messy, but the level of creativity and looking at our future is only something he could do.

It's good to have you back, Gore. Please make more after.

🎬 • A Cure for Wellness (2016) - 6/10

The queasy and claustrophobic directing is great. Like or love a lot about the ideas. Goth is pretty good. I just wish the story was tighter, and it also wasn't as long as it was. Not as superb as it could've been.

But he is truly the unhinged Gore Verbinski.

📺 • Nirvana the Band the Show (2017) - 9/10

One of the most unique comedies I've seen. Constantly surprising in strange and endearing ways. Great chemistry in the premise that elevates every story that yields.

How does this show have a beautiful version of the DreamWorks logo as a throwaway gag?

🎬 • The Lone Ranger (2013) - 5/10

Honestly? Not the worst thing ever, and I can see what it wants to achieve, but man, I just wish the leads were better and it didn't have real tonal issues.

If this is the wrong and worst Verbinski, we could be doing a lot worse. His direction still quite soars.

🎬 • Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) - 2/10

Worst then I could've possibly imagined. One miserable experience without any iota of life or value. Awful ending to a series that should've ended a decade prior then this.

Eociety has moved past the need for Captain Jack Sparrow.

🎬 • Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) - 3/10

Without the magic of Verbinski, it doesn't work. A real lack of adventure or heart makes this an unnecessary fourth installment that didn't need to happen other than for profit.

Put me to sleep. Yawn. Did not like it one bit. A shrug.

🎬 • Rango (2011) - 10/10

Remains one of the most unique and greatest animated films ever made. A memorable, grotesque tribute to the westerns of yesterday, married by Verbinski's touches as a director and his ablity to adapt.

Something we haven't seen before or since. From one legend to another.

🎬 • Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) - 7/10

Don't love as much as I recall, and it's definitely where you feel how big and convoluted these films got, but at the end of the day, Verbinski's touch and sticking the landing is what matters.

The real end, sure. This was a good trilogy.

Maybe not as tight as it's predecessor, but a pinnacle of what you can do with blockbuster filmmaking. A remarkable achievement in adventure and tension that only makes you more invested.

The CGI is still beautiful, and so is Davy Jones.

Exactly if you allowed the average PlayStation user to make a film. Mostly positive. Wish the story was a lot more interesting than it was, because it can. Basketball scenes are worth the price of an admission.

Never thought I'd see a certain kind of slang in a major film.

Really taken aback by the melancholy of how dramatically great Cage is here. A somber yet compelling story of a man trying to refix his life. The cold atmosphere only adds to the brilliance.

Of course, floating SpongeBob is the best scene. Why did it not send?
