🏺🧪 With the new Predator film out, I guess it’s a good time to repost our old ArchaeoAnimals episode where we decided that the best use of our combined zooarchaeological skills was to figure out the anatomy of the aliens in the Predator franchise.

In the final chapter of my book, Between Two Rivers, I talk about rock art and inscriptions in Saudi Arabia that tell us a bit about Nabonidus, the Babylonian king.

This dark boulder sits on reddish sand outside of Tayma, a major, multicultural hub of ancient trade. It seems unremarkable at first.

…but what I AM doing today on my birthday is donating to a bunch of fundraisers and it would really mean a lot to me if you joined in.

These fundraisers have been dealing with stagnation lately so please consider supporting them or sharing them widely - even the smallest amount helps! ⬇️

British people, help me out here. I lived in the UK for 5 years. I thought a "Farage" is what you call those BMs where no matter how much TP you use, you cannot get your ass clean. Am I remembering right?

Egyptian blue pigment found in Augusta Raurica, Switzerland. The pigments were used in wall paintings. In #Roman times, Egyptian blue was distributed throughout the Empire in a more or less standardised form of small balls of 15-20 mm in diameter. 🧵 1/2

I am seeing so many posts on social media about boycotting the inauguration. Don't you dare. Don't you dare turn your eyes away from history, even the awful, scary parts. If you don't watch it with your own eyes, you rely on others to tell you what you saw. We all must bear witness to what's coming.

I didn't think it could get worse.

It got worse. 😫

For New Year’s Day a #Roman #glass bottle in the shape of a date: dates, figs, and honey were New Year's gifts in #Roman times. According to Ovid, they should make the new year a sweet one.

One for #medieval #archaeology types: From an urban site in the midlands, a 13th/14th century Brill/Boarstall Ware pottery Rook's head. I can't find any sort of British parallel for this, so would be interested to know if anyone has seen anything like it
