#MeetAMouse This deer mouse is 2631-2 who was captured in a trap with 2629-30. Upon release they both ran up the same tree to console each other on a rough night. Funny thing is, 2629-30 was captured each night but with a different companion each time. Social behavior? @ndfieldecology.bsky.social

Since I’m not teaching #NDmammals this year plus the shitshow that is twitter rn, I was not super motivated to participate in #2025MMM. But thanks to a challenge from some former students …

Yes to this. My argument is: where would you put them? The response is usually: the Arctic! Which means thanks to human-caused climate change they’d just go extinct again as we warm up the tundra. If that’s not a waste of financial and intellectual resources I don’t know what is
Since 🦣 cloning is back in the news, I thought I’d dust off this old post I wrote for Scientific America Blogs that encapsulates how I feel about this—(even if what is happening in the lab right now was cloning, which it very much is not):

Some folks have asked, given recent news, “how do I show my friends/family the impact of NSF?” We have some easy Fact Sheets for you! Here’s a brief thread about this website: new.nsf.gov/about/fact-s... which hosts a ton of useful one-pagers.

As scientists, we must continue to support diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. Most importantly, broadening participation in science is the right thing to do. In addition, numerous peer-reviewed pubs have shown that diverse teams are more productive and innovative. Diversity has benefits!

This is a real problem that will limit creativity and productivity within the sciences. Without welcoming people with different backgrounds and experiences into STEM fields, how can we find innovative solutions to problems?
President Donald Trump’s order shutting down DEI offices was part of a slew of presidential directives from the new administration that apply to every federal agency.

But for the NSF, following the White House’s order required it to ignore a mandate from Congress.

There is a trend within ecology to use remote sensing to test hypotheses at a large scale, but this study indicates how the devil is in the details. It is essential for ecologists to remember the sticky situations brought about by scale. #biodiversity #habitat
