i haven't thought about last fm for so long but it looks like they still have the, er, let's say "embellished" bio i wrote for myself circa 2005. i wonder if anyone has ever asked my dad about his jazz career, which would be news to him

I know I’m mostly preaching to the choir here but if for whatever reason you posted your Wrapped 2025 you are an opp.

i considered getting one of the hayley wilson cathedral decks as a wall hanger but man i just cannot get past the shock of near-$90 price tag on pro decks now

(and yes i know even that price is trailing behind inflation rates)

This Giving Tuesday, another anonymous local donor has offered to match the next $1,000 we raise. That means donations will be tripled! And new monthly donations are matched twice for their full annual amount, turning $15 a month into $360 for us.

found out tonight that a guy who had a alan lomax box set lent it to his then-friend moby who, in turn, mined it for samples and then assembled the album "play"

so, if i ever get a time machine, that's my priority number one: gregor, please don't lend moby those CDs

it's a day for sharing threads, apparently!

cassette tapes were important to my habits as a listener because if i felt strongly enough that i didn't want to hear a song or hear a later song, i had to weigh that desire against the time and work required to fast forward in search of the next song
The popularization of the phrase “no skips album” is a byproduct of the rugged individualism embedded in the playlist culture that’s overtaken the EP and LP as the main avenue of musical discovery for your average listener.

I wrote about traveling to the Navajo Nation and helping to distribute 1,800 skateboards, which more or less changed my understanding of what a skateboard is. Also, what the desert is.

this thread says so much of what i've been feeling and instead of retweeting individual points i encourage everyone to just read the whole thing

(and then pick up the nearest noisemaker and sing a song)
I’ve been trying to find ways to articulate my hatred of AI-generated music that won’t come across as snobbish, but most of what I have to say about it can be boiled down to this:

None of the artists I like in any genre, regardless of era, make music that can be accurately predicted by a computer.

“I want to make music, but I don’t have the talent”

YOU DON’T KNOW THAT until you actually try to do the thing

Don’t give up on yourself and outsource the work to a computer

Plenty of great music has been made by people who “couldn’t sing” or “couldn’t play”

Emphasis on MADE

I believe in my heart that anyone and everyone who wants to make music should do, regardless of their skill level, with whatever tools they have available

But I emphasize the word “MAKE”

Open your mouth, grab your instrument, make a sound, and do it over and over again until it sounds good to you

I wrote a very serious book about the world's least serious thing and I am more proud of it than anything else I've done. Phenomenology! Performance theory! Anatheism and even some William Gass!

i'm thinking about getting an electro faustus drum thing* and curious if anyone has an alternative idea in the ~$100 area that doesn't involve me soldering or building stuff

*basically a little metal case with a piezo microphone and volume control

"the seditious six" is such a goofy-ass name, straight out of a cut scene from "hamilton" featuring a 1981 rap crew in powdered wigs, that i truly hope this administration leans into it and tries to make it catch on

i'm listening to a cat i've known for 18 years absolutely demolish what will be her last meal. (dogs seem to get cheeseburgers in this situation, but aviva is gorging herself on tuna.) this sucks. a supportive word is welcome today, if you have one to share

re-sharing to honor the man. may his memory be a blessing and his music continue to lift us
my selection for jimmy's birthday is his song i heard most often growing up, the @francoisknyc.bsky.social dub of "treat the youths right"

I just made a very difficult call to euthanize our cat and one thing that made it possible for me was using the "quality of life" checklist in this. (There are other helpful bits in there, too.) Anyway: sharing in case you might benefit from an external voice when you need to make that sort of call.
