Like many public sector digital nerds, I care about the new budget. But here I am, a few of days out, still haven't read it. First panel at the CSA Policy Pathways conference with @kaylietiessen.bsky.social @armineyalnizyan.bsky.social and host @spaikin.bsky.social — strong provocations and challenges from a great keynote talk by Armine about the care economy.

That thing when it's budget day in Canada and you're in Ottawa and buy a sandwich and the guy in front of you is the Finance Minister (too distracted to look at his shoes...)

Just finished @shannonvallor.bsky.social’s book, The AI Mirror. Deeply appreciative of the thought and care that went into this book. Left reflecting upon one of many challenges posed: how might we “reclaim technology as a human-wielded instrument of care, responsibility, and service”?

I recently repaired my 17 year old Ortlieb cycling panniers with some new straps. In a context of so many disposable consumer goods, these nylon straps, fastex clips and screws brought me so much joy. We need more care in design, materials and repair. Well done Ortlieb.

From earlier this week, a brilliant bit of writing (and truth) about the upcoming Fifa World Cup via the Guardian. That’s a zinger of a paragraph.

And one of our favourite quotes/calls to action: "There is an urgency to make our public spaces places people want to be... Messiness provides an opportunity for people to 'speak their needs.'"
"Having a city that can accommodate messiness is a sign of urban health." Within this, public spaces can be a place of "positive friction" and an opportunity to "deliver on the promise of empathy."

Big news! I've been working with @sladner.bsky.social on "Off the Path" -- a limited series podcast where we talk about user research careers, especially our own. Episodes come out October 10. In this hype video, I reflect on why I decided to take on this new project together.
