My critical analysis of the anti-trans astroturf group, the LGB Alliance, has just been published in the special edition of the Bulletin of Applied Transgender Studies. I recommend the whole special edition - it's open access, no pay wall.

The pub I was in yesterday had no gender-neutral toilets. It highlights the impracticality of what's being demanded of us.

But that's the lesser issue.

Asking trans people to stop using the single-sex toilets that match their gender is asking them to participate in their own detransition.

I've just been contacted by a media team that want to interview me for a YouTube show about 'free speech' and 'cancel culture,' provisionally titled 'The impossible conversation.' I said, 'no thanks.' It really hit home the contrived, asymmetrical nature of these continuing narratives ... 1/

Good news! UCU have won an employment tribunal against the directors of the film 'Adult Human Female,' who claimed UCU's protest against the screening of the film represented discrimination and harassment due to their GC beliefs. UCU press release here for details:

I attended today's hundreds-strong trans rights demo at Holyrood in Edinburgh, not just protesting the Supreme Court ruling and the EHRC / Gov segregationist guidelines, but also the SNP for not challenging the SC decision, which they could have, at the European Court of Human Rights ...

Here I am, receiving an award from the First Minister at the Scottish Trades Union Congress, as UCU Edinburgh's LGBT+ rep. Later I made one of several speeches for a motion that condemned the Cass Review. The motion passed. Oh, and I used the ladies' toilets with no problem.

UCU statements by its LGBT+ members' and Women members' National Standing Committees, on the terror unleashed on the trans, non-binary and intersex communities by the Supreme Court ruling. We unequivocally reject the ruling made by the Supreme Court:

Great analysis by CN on the half-life offered to trans people by the SC ruling:

"Out yourself, and have no access [or] hope to god that you’re never outed ... transition as a form of death: the necessity to leave everything behind and assume a new identity ... and hope to god you can stay safe."

UCU's LGBT+ UK standing committee (of which I'm a member) is drafting a statement. Unity, sharing and solidarity are vital. Please do reach out to the national committee (me or others) to know what's going on at a national level, so that we've got each other's backs: www.ucu.org.uk/article/2971...

Brilliant article by Sophie Lewis on the Supreme Court ruling: "This is also paradoxically why TERFism, like all fascist discourses ... imagines itself upside-down, as somehow preyed-upon, bullied, colonized, and at risk of genocidal erasure at the hands of the subjugated group it dehumanizes."
The UK Supreme Court’s transphobic ruling on the definition of woman last week is a defeat for all women—even, ultimately, the self-described feminists celebrating it, and the women who will gain in the short term from their alliance with the carceral state.

my latest for @thenation.com
The UK's Anti-Trans Ruling Is a Defeat for All Women
Even the self-described feminists celebrating the Supreme Court's attempt to banish trans people from womanhood will pay a heavy price.

If this is something we're beginning to discuss openly on Bluesky, then I may as well say it, I applied for a new passport just a few days ago. I don't want to catastrophize but I think once the EHRC's statutory guidelines are published in the summer, everything is fair game, as in the U.S.A.
It’s hard to imagine a more straightforward demonstration of the principle that trans people do not enjoy UK citizenship than a serious proposal to strip us of our passports, and with them our right to leave the country or even to vote.
They're coming after passports

I'm a trans woman who frequently does try to use gender-neutral toilets, and that's why I know that this call for trans people to use 'third space' / gender-neutral bathrooms is unfeasible, not to mention cruel and even dangerous. Here are some of my reflections:

The Supreme Court and the reality of gender-neutral toilets
Since the Supreme Court decision and the uncompromising ‘clarity’ of EHRC chair Kishwer Falkner’s declaration to blanket-ban trans people from men’s / women’s public restrooms, I’ve gone through all k...

So proud to have been at Edinburgh's massive protest against the Supreme Court stitch-up to take away trans people's rights. It's easy to feel demoralised until you realise the scale of the anger and the strength of the solidarity in support of trans rights. This is the beginning of the fight back.
Numbers are huge at the trans rights march and demo in Edinburgh. Good to see loads of @ucu.org.uk comrades here.
