“Get her!” the leader yelled to the other man. He was still balancing himself, steadying his aim so he could throw his blade, but Rhel had already sprung to her feet, grabbing something silver off of her bedroll and running into the trees with one fluid movement. Her captor ran after her, disappearing into the trees as well, leaving me behind with the man and woman. Kaede still quietly twitched on the ground. “So much for your friend,” the woman sneered, looking my way. “Can’t trust anybody, huh?” A small sound came out of the woods, light and airy. Music. It was a low-pitched note, played on a flute, which I knew to be small and silver. “On the contrary,” I told them as the music progressed, increasing in volume, slow and melancholy, “it all depends on the company you keep.” The music stopped abruptly, and there was a distant, wet sound, like the spraying of blood. We peered toward the woods, but there was only darkness to be seen. Then, whooshing almost silently, a throwing knife came flying out from the trees, straight at the man standing next to me.

Before them, the foyer yawned into a kitchen area, where different fae could be seen flitting back and forth with various confections. A piano that was either made of glass or flowing water was stationed off toward the left set of stairs, with pink, lotus-like flowers dancing across the top. A tall fae with deer-like antlers sat at the bench and played a light but haunting melody. Beside the pianist was another fae plucking at a golden harp, and several others playing violins and a cello. In the main area of the foyer, other fae danced, twirled, sang, and laughed.

While Nora and Master Landon worked on honing their control over a few holy crystal shards, I started once again to worry about what would come next. Faith, however, mercifully distracted me by filling my head with what could only be described as… lo-fi elevator jazz. Catchy at points, then slipping into vaguely jarring refrains, as if the shield couldn’t quite pick the following note without risking copyright infringement. “Wait. Are you just… using my memories to generate music?” A tiny bell pealed out with high-pitched dings. “Could I switch stations? Maybe something nostalgic… like, there’s this anime I used to watch. A petite but fiery sorceress who never gave up, no matter how bad the odds were! How about the theme song from the second season? I think it’s pretty rocking!” Faith rewarded me with an enhanced version of the melody, letting me mentally sing along in its original language as best I could from memory. “Yeah, that’s the stuff! ‘I won’t be stopped by anyone’… For a teenager, she knew what she was talking about...”

Almost forgot to post mine, after toiling away on Canva 🫠 I *did* have to opt for a synonym, though.

For brief context: the character referenced in this edition #WIPSnips, Callum, is a priest...in an abandoned church that he and his friends have discovered to be a nest for demons ✨️
The interior of any empty church in a blue filter is the background image. In the center of it, a slightly transparent, off-white rectangle where black text reads: "The moment seemed to move slowly to Callum, but altogether too fast all at once. His mind went to quick work, trying to seal what would invariably be a core memory: the damp, musty smell of the cellar fused with the stench of sulfur; the cold air diminishing any overexertion he might have felt from descending the spiral stairs so hurriedly; the sight of the horde, with their leathery skin in hues ranging from maroon to bone-white to the inky black of the night; and the sounds . . . the sounds of the wailing, the demonic screeching. It might as well have been a symphony to him. An full orchestral suite in the finest opera hall. Although he’d mostly convinced himself these creatures did not feel fear, a certain part of him relished the notion that they did in this exact moment. I went through so much making this cute little graphic for #WIPSnips for Monday, only to realize I never posted it 🫠

C'est la vie, enjoy this snippet from my rough draft of book 2 in my forthcoming series, Night Stalkers, Inc. 💅

The text reads: Q was gliding through the air on a swing that was anchored to a balcony somewhere further up. The swing seemed made almost entirely of flowers and vines. Q laughed as they moved through the air, a pleasant sound that stirred the hearts of all who heard it. Q was a heavy-set figure, with richly ebony skin that coupled beautifully with their light pink curls. Their hands had been delicately manicured, just as beautiful as the flowers that surrounded them on either side of the swing. Their bare feet kicked in lazy contentment through the air, adorned by anklets made of delicate flowers. They wore a flowing pink gown that looked like it was made of flower petals, with peony-like flowers scattered throughout it. The corset of their gown was lined with gold fabric that sparkled when the light caught it just right and gave their plentiful breasts a lift. A chiffon-like fabric formed bubble-like caps on their shoulders before spilling into lazy sleeves. What looked like petals at a first glance were butterflies clinging to Q’s back, forming a high collar and giving them a regal appearance. Their lush lips were painted a deep red, parted in laughter. If Q was a goddess or deity of any sort, it wasn’t hard for any of the Night Stalkers to believe their association with [redacted]. Just observing them for that brief moment had them equally captivated and enamored. Nearly enough for them to forget why they needed to meet with them.
