“Get her!” the leader yelled to the other man. He was still balancing himself, steadying his aim so he could throw his blade, but Rhel had already sprung to her feet, grabbing something silver off of her bedroll and running into the trees with one fluid movement. Her captor ran after her, disappearing into the trees as well, leaving me behind with the man and woman. Kaede still quietly twitched on the ground. “So much for your friend,” the woman sneered, looking my way. “Can’t trust anybody, huh?” A small sound came out of the woods, light and airy. Music. It was a low-pitched note, played on a flute, which I knew to be small and silver. “On the contrary,” I told them as the music progressed, increasing in volume, slow and melancholy, “it all depends on the company you keep.” The music stopped abruptly, and there was a distant, wet sound, like the spraying of blood. We peered toward the woods, but there was only darkness to be seen. Then, whooshing almost silently, a throwing knife came flying out from the trees, straight at the man standing next to me.
