Posts about the San Francisco Giants.
I’m guessing Gallen signs with Cubs for close to what Bob posted

I thought I would take a quick look at Rule 5 eligible relief options. Now I’m like 30 pitchers deep watching video. I need to seek help.

I’ll post a top 5 on Monday, haven’t been too enthused by anyone, but RHP Chris Campos (LAD) is interesting.

Hope PIT gets him right.
The Giants announced that former top prospect Marco Luciano was claimed off waivers by the Pirates. They now have 39 players on their 40-man roster.

Out of the seven advisors to Posey, only two have baseball exec experience. One of them being Bobby Evans who was out of baseball since the Giants fired him. I don’t know if that’s the right mix for Posey, who also had no executive experience.
The Giants announced that Curt Casali and Javier Lopez are back as advisors to the baseball operations department. Paul Bien, their VP of analytics, has been promoted and is now an assistant general manager.

Need to up my game next year. @fangraphs.com

I don’t see Lodolo costing that much. He’s projected for 2.5 WAR this year, let’s say another 2.5 WAR next year. 5 WAR, but he’ll get pricier in arb, probably 12M total over two years. So net value is ~4 WAR. That typically costs a back half of top 100 prospect.
Lodolo probably costs Eldridge. I do think you could get Kelly for less than Matos though. Meckler+

You get Lodolo, and add someone like Merrill Kelly, and that’ll be fine. That should leave them with enough $ to still tackle RF, 2B, and a few bucks for RP.
Giants need one SP from this bucket (in order of talent imo): Skubal, Luzardo, Ryan, Soriano, Rasmussen, Cabrera, Lodolo, deGrom, Baz, Gore.

I think Lodolo is a good fit, in terms of potential cost, upside, salary. 2 years control at around 10-12M total, projected ~5 WAR. Level+Matos, or Ramos+?
December 3, 2025 at 8:37 PM
I would rather go for Zack Littell or Adrian Houser before Zac Gallen at 20M+ and a QO.

The Giants sold 10% to SSP for roughly $300–400M? How much went into the ballpark vs non-Giants ventures? They could have used some of those proceeds to buttress the payroll through 2030. Instead, there is a spend ceiling below CBT to meet ROI expectations of SSP. Organization harvestation.
Private equity is already ruining the SF Giants.

Bleak. This franchise is just not in a position to think like this.

Giants now have two high slot (Hentges, Gage) and two low slot lefties (Miller, Sanmartin) on their 40-man roster. I think it might be worth it to go in with 3 LHP out of the bullpen, being Hentges + two low slots. It’s good depth but also allows two quality counters to Ohtani.

I had Cease as the best value among the top of the SP class, but this is a lot. 7/180 would have been fantastic, but I guess 30M is the premium for what this class has to offer.
NEWS: The Blue Jays are signing Dylan Cease to a seven-year, $210 million contract, sources tell The Athletic.

It's the largest pitching contract in franchise history.

Imai has a smart agent.
Imai Tatsuya, a posted MLB-ready pitcher, would like to take down a team like the Dodgers rather than join them. :eyes:

Josuar Gonzalez vs. Luis Hernandez vs. Jhonny Level will be a fascinating discussion next year. Each has their own very unique path to the majors. Gonzalez, the best glove and athlete, Hernandez with feel and power, Level with a bit of everything.

Things only I find interesting. That last post from Heyman about Knizer DFA. It was the first time he has used wRC+ in a post since 2021. I’m guessing an agent text c&p.

When I put together my PC shortlist, I asked a few industry folks for names. I got like two dozen names, Meccage was not one of them. Not that it means anything.

My role at work has dramatically changed in the last week, so not sure I’ll be able to put it together. Dramatically increased workload.

Time is running out, if I don’t get it done by this weekend, it’s not happening. :(
Psyched to see your offseason plan for this year. Agreed that pitching is the priority, but hard not to be intrigued by a trade for a Brandon Donovan type bat. I don’t think the current lineup gets it done.

McNeil is an interesting target. Defensive value at 2B and some versatility in the corners. Solidly average bat, with contact profile. Not too pricey at 12M AAV for 2026 and has a team option. Shouldn’t be too expensive to acquire. Platoon with Koss to keep him fresh, opens up Schmitt to be moved.
Per Jeff Passan, Kodai Senga is "extremely available", Luisangel Acuña, Mark Vientos, Brett Baty, Brandon Nimmo, and Jeff McNeil can also be had, and the Mets have interest in Devin Williams and are "mulling" signing both him and Edwin Diaz.

Rule 5 protection deadline is today, I think the Giants will protect:
RHP Will Bednar
RHP Spencer Miles

Just under the line for me:
RHP Gerelmi Maldonado

Bednar, 1R capital, 96-99 FB elite IVB, has shown SL feel in past. Miles, feel for strikes coming off TJ, 94-96 sinker, two good breaking balls.

Listened to the Flemming interview. 😂 At Flemming’s characterizations of some staff that have left. I’m guessing Brian Bannister is the chief person he had in mind.
Last I heard was the widely reported comment from the FO that they expected to get most of their contracts done by next week. Earlier that day, Flemming was on Roger's podcast and relayed that Posey or Vitello had said they were at the "50 yard line."

Haven't seen any names, though.

Has there been any chatter about the pitching coach? All I’ve seen is they were rebuffed when trying to interview SD’s BP coach.
PC shortlist (head, asst, BP):

Max Weiner -Texas PC
Matt Hobbs -Arkansas PC
Matt Pierpont -STL Dir of Pitching
Connor McGuiness -LAD Asst. PC
Justin Lehr -TOR MiLB Pitching Director
Jarred Hughes -LAA Coord. of Pitching Analysis
Spenser Davis -SVU PC
Luis Pino -SF ACL PC
Joe Torres -CLE Asst. PC

I think evaluating changes in bat speed needed to taken with a grain of salt if the gap is <2mph. That really could be an artifact of changes in how and where the hitter is being pitched. Eldridge’s bat speed was below avg in MLB at 71.5 mph. I wouldn’t be surprised if context adj added 1.5-2mph

Thought this was going to be a standard overview, but is actually one of the more interesting beat stories I’ve read this year. Lots of interesting stuff we don’t typically get a view into
