The threat made to Harper was Mark DeRosa “just joking”, reported by The Athletic (7/28/25)

These are the “unluckiest” pitchers who threw >90 IP last year and should have been at least average, based on a rudimentary model.

Per Brooks, Lincecum alone threw 125 splits in 2010 postseason. I’m guessing Savant has those as changeups. www.brooksbaseball.net/tabs.php?pla...

Who is this young core that should make them feel comfortable about not landing an elite SP? Their best “young” arm is Landen Roupp, a 2-3 win type SP. Maybe Birdsong, Tidwell, Whisenhunt, etc take steps, but rn there’s not much to pencil in for the future

I’d be interested to see if there’s empirical backing for the claim that current players are less developed, accountable, or attuned to the nuances of the game. If the argument is that current pros are less detail-oriented or make more mental mistakes than players of the past, I’m not convinced.

Tony Basilio, who works in Knoxville sports radio, offers some insight into why Vitello might leave Tennessee. He suggests that Vitello has a number of issues with AD Danny White re: team size, NIL allocation, and more.

Which Giants player is most likely to sleep with a Lou Seal stuffie?

I wonder if there will be mutual interest between SD and Nick Hundley. www.nytimes.com/athletic/669...

The Giants did the same in 2025. They removed the data analysts from being on-site with the minor league teams and put them in the Arizona complex. So, on the same page as Mike Rizzo’s FO. www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2025/...

Not all that surprising, but first time seeing Melvin hire pinned on ownership. I would guess they also gave Melvin a free hand to hire his buddies. Question is who within ownership drove it, probably Baer, but Posey seemed involved in ops (see Chapman extension)

Lee says Giants have asked him about 3B/2B/1B Sung-moon Song 송성문 (29.1Y), the best position player in KBO this year. 20/20 player, who increased power in 2024. Cost likely < Hyeseong Kim’s 3/12. If he can be ok at 2B (mostly at 3B recently), LHH platoon fit.

Hmmm. Maybe to help players, analysts could be added and be set up in the clubhouse, perhaps located across the hall from the manager’s office.

There is quite a bit of variation in determining McDonald’s pitch mix and his primary breaking ball:
Statcast (CB), Pitch Info (SL), BP’s Stuff Pro (Sweeper). @mikepetriello.bsky.social @harrypav.bsky.social @srbrown70.bsky.social

15 whiffs on CB*. Third most on the CB this year, tied with a few others including Roupp (against PHI). baseballsavant.mlb.com/statcast_sea...

Pitch Info has that primary breaking as a SL.

Sonny Gray sounds open to waiving his no-trade clause. The wrinkle though is that he has 35M due for 2026, plus a 5M buyout for 2027. CBT $ is recalculated after a trade, so his CBT cost for 2026 would be 40M (? or 35M).

104 ERA-, 84 FIP-, 75 DRA-(!) this year in 180IP.

Hmmm, other than the McCarthy flyball, rest were routine. Just a language quibble here, but does concern me when routine plays are considered impressive because that usually means there was a slow jump or inefficient route to make it look harder. www.nytimes.com/athletic/663...
